Is there a way to navigate by regions on the web? I am using Google Colab right now and it seems like jumping from region to region may be a good way to move between cells. (Currently, I am switching to focus mode and arrowing up and down but that often takes me through the lines of text within each cell and skips cell outputs.) I checked the User Guide and Input Gestures without success. Grateful for any assistance.

Kind Regards,

With NVDA, what JAWS terms as regions are termed as landmarks. You can use the D key or shift + D to navigate forward and backward through regions/landmarks.

I hope this helps.

Also, landmarks are shown in the elements list dialog (NVDA`f7) as a treeview, if you select that type of elements (instead of, for example, links or headings).
Kind regards,
Noelia

Now, what is needed is to get web designers to use landmarks in
meaningful ways. I don't use them because when I've looked at them they
tell me and move me to nothing useful. For example, the Internet is
changing and it is now common to have line after line of material
between the title of an article and the actual start of the text. Also,
on the New York Times front page, there are sections linked to that
have lots of stories on a certain topic, such as current news about the
Trump administration. To reasonable way to get to the start of the
articles except to search for a word that may be above the first story,
such as stand, and other such sections may have a few words above the
first story, but this isn't any sort of reasonable site design for blind
users. There should be a landmark at the actual start of the text in
such sections and sites should have land marks at the actual start of
article text.

Searching from the top of the page for the word by often takes you close
to the start of articles but there are some sites where it doesn't and
you still, even on too many sites, have to down arrow perhaps four lines
to the actual article text.

Gene,

I completely agree with this. Landmarks could be very useful, especially in conjunction with ARIA labels. But I think it's one of those areas of semantics that is neglected in many cases.
