Good morning to all.

I just installed NVDA on my Windows 10 Dell laptop amd I had two questions.

First of all, I have learned that the insert key is the equivalent to the Jaws key, correct?

So my first official question: When in a word 13 document, how do I get back to the top of a document?

And second, I was doing some learning of NVDA and needed to get back to Jaws. So I selected my jaws icon from the desktop and shut off NVDA using the insert Q keyboard command. But when I went back to my desktop to restart jaws, it  did nothing. I had to use NVDA to restart my laptop.

Any information and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Jerry

Hello,
Yes Insert key functions mostly similarly in more or lessin both screenreaders.
And to move to top of the document in any standerd text/document processor software, you can press CTRL+Home. As it is a standard windows command, it works withany screenreader.
If you have trouble finding home key, it depends
on your keyboard. If you have a large keyboard, you should find pack of six keys.In that pack, Home key will be on the second key of the top row.  If you have a compact keyboard, then perhaps to press home key, you will have to press FN key with right errow. Not entirely sure about it though.

And for your second question this is what I believe:
When we start, restart or exit NVDA, our focus doesn't remain where we kept it.
This is how I switch screenreaders:
1. Exit the first screenreader. In your case, exit NVDA.
2. open start window by pressing window key.
3. Type the name of the screenreader which you want to start. In your case you can type JAWS and press enter.
Sometimes, searching in the start window doesn't yield expected results. So I use run  dialog box  . To open Run  dialog box one can press Windows+R.  But to start any program from the run dialog box, we have to type the full name. for NVDA it isNVDA and for JAWS it is JASW+version like JAWS2024 or something. I think, with enough practice, one don't need any screen reader to go to run  dialog box or start any screenreader from the start window.
Thanks.

First, to get to the top of a document, use the Word shortcut, control+home. Note this is a Word shortcut, so it’ll work when you are using either JAWS or NVDA.

I’d suggest you associate a shortcut with JAWS. Find the icon on the desktop, hit control+enter to bring up the properties for the icon, type a ‘j’ in the shortcut box and then click on save. After this, you can restart JAWS by hitting control+alt+j.

Thanks. Also, if I understood it correctly, there is no NVDA for Windows 11, correct? And if so, would the one for Windows 10 work? Thanks again.

Hi,

NVDA does work on Windows 11. There isn't a separate "Windows 11" build— the current NVDA installer supports both Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you're upgrading from Windows 10 to 11, NVDA will continue to work; it's best to update to the latest NVDA after the upgrade.
