Hi everyone,

I am experiencing an accessibility issue with the latest WhatsApp Desktop application on Windows and am wondering if anyone has a recommended add-on or workflow that helps.

The issue I’m facing is that when I am in the edit field of a chat message, using the arrow keys to read back what I have typed does not work reliably. NVDA often fails to read the text I have just entered, and I am forced to tab out of the field and tab back in to regain focus and read the message before sending it.

Has anyone found a stable way to handle this, or is there a specific add-on that improves the responsiveness of the WhatsApp Desktop edit field with NVDA?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,

Mister Kayne

Hi Mister Kayne,
You are definitely not alone in this! The newer WhatsApp Desktop app from the Microsoft Store is known to be quite buggy with screen readers, particularly in the chat edit fields where arrow key navigation often fails.
While there isn't a specific add-on that completely fixes this desktop app bug, many NVDA users have found a much more stable workflow by simply switching to WhatsApp Web in a browser (like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge). The edit fields in the web version behave much more predictably with arrow keys, and NVDA reads the text perfectly without needing to tab out and back in.
If you must use the Desktop app, sometimes pressing NVDA + Space to toggle between Browse Mode and Focus Mode can help force NVDA to recognize the edit field again without losing your place.
Hope this alternative workflow helps!
Best regards,
Aung Pyae Phyo

Dear Aung Pyae Phyo,

I really appreciate your candid feedback regarding the WhatsApp desktop application. I’ve tried fighting the system myself by contacting their accessibility support team and even encouraged other members of this mailing list to do the same. Unfortunately, ever since artificial intelligence has taken over, it seems human common sense and accountability have flown out the window—or been buried six feet under—as there has been absolutely no human response to the tickets.

I will definitely take your suggestion and try toggling focus mode to work around the issue.

Thank you so much once again. I believe you are a relatively new member of the list; I recall seeing your introductory email, apologies for not responding/ replying. Things have been quite "up the wall" lately. My manners have taken a bit of a back seat—I've totally lost the patience I had in my 60s (though I should clarify I’m not quite 60 yet, I’m just heading that way soon!).

This is not quite accurate. It works well enough with JAWS, but JAWS has specific What’s App scripts, so I assume they correct it.

You said it doesn’t work with screen readers, there’s the inaccuracy.

All the best

Steve

Hi Mister Kayne,
Thank you so much for your warm reply! I really appreciate your kind words and the friendly welcome to the list. Reading your message definitely brought a smile to my face—you clearly have a great sense of humor!
I completely agree with you about the "AI takeover." It often feels like companies are replacing genuine human care and common sense with automated systems, leaving us users to figures things out on our own. It’s a bit frustrating, but I’m glad we have this wonderful community to lean on and support each other.
Please don't worry at all about not replying to my introductory email earlier. We all have those "up the wall" moments, and I completely understand.
I really look forward to interacting with you more in this group. Let me know how the Focus Mode trick works out for you!
Warm regards,
Aung Pyae Phyo

I didn't say it doesn't work with screen-readers. I said it works with
JAWS, NVDA, and for all I know other screen-readers as well but that
would have to be checked.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for the correction! You are absolutely right. Since I primarily use NVDA and don't use JAWS myself, I wasn't aware that JAWS has specific scripts that handle this WhatsApp bug. I should have been more specific instead of generalizing for all screen readers.
I really appreciate you clearing that up and sharing that insight with the list!
Best regards,
Aung Pyae Phyo

different product. I see your message wasn't commenting on my message

Hello Aung Pyae Phyo,

It is truly a marvelous time to be alive, isn't it? We are living in a peak era of efficiency where AI is doing a stellar job of making everything infinitely more complicated while simultaneously stripping away the last vestiges of human nuance. It is an absolute delight.

I am an enthusiastic user of these digital overlords. In fact, I use AI tools quite frequently to draft my replies to this very mailing list. I’ve even been helpfully flagged by our esteemed colleagues here for the "robotic" nature of my contributions, which I suppose is a small price to pay for the sheer thrill of automating my existence. I truly do my own Google and help forum searches first, of course, but then I turn to AI to handle the heavy lifting, primarily because I am perpetually running out of time and my own human brain is currently buffering.

Since we are clearly kindred spirits in navigating this brave new world, I would love to invite you to subscribe to my website: The Somebody, Nobody, Anybody and Everybody Blog!

If you want to witness more of this delightful humor in its natural habitat, do check out the BLIND-BLOOPERS category. You will find a subscription form on the site where you can enter your email address—just a word of caution, please do read the instructions above the email field carefully. I’d hate for us to be disconnected just as we’re establishing a connection, and I’d hate for the machines to have the last laugh. I publish new posts once a week, assuming the internet—and my patience—holds up.

Looking forward to our continued interactions, human-to-human (mostly).
