NVDA doesn't always announce when text has been copied to clipboard. It's announced when cursor manager is used, for example, in browse mode when native selection is not used.
Browse mode can be used on webpages an certain documents.
Native selection means that we can use the selection available in browsers, for example, to copy format, not just plain text.
Personally, if it's not a reliable way to announce clipboard actions, I prefer that this feature is available in add-ons, not in NVDA's core.
Please, see why NVDA doesn't include this feature at

Hope this helps

This incorrect claim has been used for years as a reason not to put the
feature in the core of NVdA. It is simply not true. I've used the
add-on for years and it is almost never wrong. I really don't think a
possible error rate of perhaps half a percent, if that, is a sufficient
reason not to include the feature. It is an expected feature in
screen-readers, going back for decades. I've probably discussed this in
a Github form and on another NVdA list and there has been no meaningful
response. I am making a statement of what I consider to be either fact
or very strongly supported opinion. I'm referring to my claim that the
feature is almost always correct. Will others please comment on whether
I am correct?

My impression is that developers also don't like the feature because it
isn't within what a creen-reader is supposed to do. If so, to be
consistent, remove the links list. That is a completely nonexistent
interface on a web page and is outside of what a screen-reader is
supposed to do.

What add-on is used to get the announcement of copying or pasting?  I wish NVDA would give these spoken confirmations.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go Dodgers!

One add-on that does, I haven't looked to see if there are others, is
Clipspeak.

If you just want clipboard functions announced, I would recommend
against that add-on. It has so many functions and I don't know if it
changes any default behaviors without the user changing them.

In order to install the NVDA Enhanced Global Commands add-on you have to uninstall Clipspeak, so I'll just save the Enhanced Global Commands add-on and try it at another time.  Thanks much.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go Dodgers!

The more basic things you make people get add-ons for, the newer users will be put off by it.

Judging from the almost complete lack of response on list, people are
either tired of asking for the same thing for years, or they aren't
interested. Neither of which justifies not including these things in
screen-readers. I saw somewhere, I don't recall where, that
announcement of copy and paste is the most asked for addition to NVDA.

Insisting that it is not accurate is simply not true, yet that reason is
given by developers whenever this discussion occurs.

My personal thoughts are that in an ideal world there should be a refactor of speak command keys to allow not only for specific keypresses being spoken as they all are now, but for this sort of thing as well.
One of the more useful things for learners when I was teaching screen readers was the ability to customise this in JAWS - for instance, you could have keyboard echo set to almost everything but disable tab and enter, 2 keys people often found easy to learn. In that regard JAWS verbosity options are far superior to NVDA, although for long-term users, having to go in and turn off all the tutor messages and control help gets old hat pretty quickly.

On the other hand, having these as an addon isn't *really* a problem, especially given that the addon store is built into the screen reader now. Setting up Clipspeak would be just one of the options I'd offer a new user I was introducing to NVDA, for example.

Sean.

Hey folks,

Thanks for raising this.
I took a look at the issue history to try to understand what happened here.
The issue #75 was closed 16 years ago, and NV Access has not discussed it on GitHub since then.
There was not a large amount of support for the feature then, in fact only 2 reporters.
It was briefly discussed again 8 years ago by the community and they came to a resolution to withdraw the proposal.
Please feel free to open a new issue and we will reconsider it.

Regards,
Sean

The fact of only a few people discuss this request in GitHub is maybe because most users do not know how to use it...

To support this statement, I can say that Clipspeak was downloaded more than 9000 times since 2025.06.13...

So, it seems that many users want this feature...

I would also add to Sean's comment that even if it has been raised on lists like this one more than we've noticed, as we do keep saying - raising something on the list will not get it actioned.  If you want something actioned there MUST be a GitHub issue for it.  We've recently updated the issue template to make it easier to submit issues, and I included a walkthrough of filing an issue using it in In-Process earlier this week: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-30th-september-2025/#issue

Yes issue #75 was closed 16 years ago, and while in many cases, the original argument used then is unchanged - Windows generally does NOT give us confirmation that something has been cut / copied or pasted, there are several factors which make this worth revisiting:

1) The add-ons which have provided this functionality have, by all accounts, done so with very high accuracy and been anecdotally very popular for the existence of this function.
2) And probably the biggest argument for including it - there are situations now where information such as "copied" IS reported by NVDA - in Word using UIA for instance.  I would argue that it is now much more confusing having that reported in some places and not others, than it would be to say "copied" when something wasn't copied maybe a couple percent of the time.  That is the biggest argument I would put forward for including the feature.  Even if calculating whether something has been copied or not is incorrect on rare occasions, it is probably less confusing than having "copied" reported in some cases but not all when you do copy something.  Until we get to the point where we can guarantee text has in fact been copied, it should be an option, but I'd probably argue to have it enabled by default.

So Gene, to you particularly - please stop just angrily ranting in the group.  Please be constructive.  I've seen a few angry posts from you in the group this week - yet not one GitHub issue, or even email directly to US, when either of those is more likely to produce a result than shouting to the community.  I've given you a good justification for an issue there, but I'll leave it to you to take the next step and create the issue.

Kind regards

Quentin

That's called laziness, where devs can't be bothered to action simple things like that. <Smile>.
Seriously though, the problem is that all devs generally are advanced users, so they don't always put themselves in the place of the new user.
Keyboard actions like copy and paste should be echoed, or at least should have an option to turn that feature on or off.

But that's the problem Sean, if a new user wants to start on their own, they are not necessarily going to know about Clipspeak.
I think if all characters are turned on, then actions should be echoed. If set to None or Words, then don't echo perhaps?

Again, new users to NVDA are not going to go straight to GitHub. I think this should be part of the core, it’s what every decent screen reader should do.

All the best
