NVDA - Stopping the extra chatter

Hey,

I am really new to NVDA, I am not fully blind but am visually impaired. It seems like a great software, but I am really struggling with the constant window title announcements, That every time I change focus NVDA immediately starts announcing whatever it sees, instead of waiting for me to hover over anything or select something with navigation keys.
I know there is "speak-on-command" but this doesn't let me use the mouse tracker which I like and then all the genAIs seem to say that the old feature which removes the automatic announcement has been taken away.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem or some plug-ins that I could use?

ALT +N, P, S, B to get to Browse settings tab once and tab till you get to the setting: Automatic Say All on page load, uncheck this box ALT +A to apply the setting and ESC to close the setting dialogue box.

Thank you for the response! Is there maybe a specific laptop binding for that because I didn't find it change much? ( ATL + N) What exactly was it meant to do?

The suggestion only applies when using Browse Mode on the Internet or in
another program that uses it like Adobe Reader. If you are saying that
you move the mouse and in general, when you click on a program to give
it focus, the Window starts to read a lot of information, I suggest
pressing control to stop speech. Control stops speech and takes no
other action.

Hi Rose,

Pressing the NVDA Key + M toggles mouse tracking on and off. The NVDA
Key is the Insert key on the Desktop layout and Caps Lock on the
laptop layout.

 Nvda anounces all these things of course because its target audience - who are blind - need to know what app they're switching to. 

I'm surprised that the on-demand  speech mode stops the mouse-tracking setting talking, in my head the fact that you've turned tracking on means you've chosen speech for that purpose. 

The NVDA dictionaries can use regular expressions, which means you could match typical window titles and mute them as you shift between windows, but it'd be a bit of a tedius process to set them all up. 

I see quite often on social media people trying to use NVDA with a mouse, perhaps it's an area NvAccess could investigate in the future. Although I'd imagine in many if not most circumstances NVDA isn't the right tool for the job for a mouse user.

Hmm I see, thank you for the insight. I'll look into what you mentioned, but maybe I should search around for different softwares. It's so frustrating looking for the perfect thing! haha
It would be interesting if NVAccess did research it, but I suppose it would be extending their scope to a new type of issue.

Mouse tracking is on by default and if the person is using it to read
information as she moves the mouse, she won't want to turn it off. If
it is off, you will move the mouse and not hear anything. If that is
what you want, turn mouse tracking off.

From the User Guide:
12.1.10.3. Enable mouse tracking
Key: NVDA+m
When enabled, NVDA will announce the text currently under the mouse
pointer, as you move it around the screen. This allows you to find
things on the screen, by physically moving the mouse, rather than trying
to find them through object navigation.

Hi,

I should have made that more clear. Yes, I am primarily interested in the mouse-tracking feature and not so much the other announcements. As my main use case for this software is to read long pdf articles, announce VScode files which are too small to see etc. (basically just anything on the screen which is a bit titchy )

There are certain things you need to know, given what you said. There
is a read to end command, which you would use to have a document read.
You could open the document with a mouse and once it is opened, issue
the read to end command. By default, a PDF document will be read
automatically when it opens because you are in Browse mode, the same
mode you are in on a web page.

As I said, control will stop speech. If you open a web page or PDF
document, you can stop speech by pressing control which stops any speech
and stops automatic reading on open. If you want to move in a document
and read from a certain point, you may move, then issue read to end. If
you want to just read from the top, you can let automatic reading read.
But if you are going to move in a web page or a PDF document where you
will be in browse mode in both cases, if you want to know visually where
you are when you move you have to enable a feature in NVDA that shows
you that. Browse mode doesn't line up with where you actually are in a
document so to actually see where you are,, you need to enable a
feature. I don't use it and I'll let others discuss it.

I assume you are using the desktop layout, which is the default. Read
to end is either insert+down arrow, that is down arrow on the main keyboard.

Hi all,
Based on a brief conversation I had with Rose, I don't think a screen reader is what Rose is really after - she wants to find software that can read selected text and announce what is under the mouse pointer. For that, I don't think a screen reader is the right technology but more towards a read aloud program or a screen magnifier.

I found a free and very simple screen reader. All it does is read
aloud whatever is under the mouse pointer:

Be aware, however, that it hasn't been updated in 11 years.
