Dear NVDA Users Group,

I'm exploring a feature enhancement for NVDA: an AI-powered image CAPTCHA solver. This feature would enable users to automatically solve image CAPTCHAs on websites, making it easier to access and interact with web content.

Currently, I rely on the Be My Eyes application for Windows to solve image CAPTCHAs, but I'd like to explore the possibility of integrating this functionality directly into NVDA. This would allow me to reserve Be My Eyes for more complex tasks, such as image description and object recognition.

Here's how it could work:

1. User encounters an image CAPTCHA on a website

2. Presses a designated key combination

3. NVDA's AI engine processes the CAPTCHA image and recognizes the text

4. Recognized text is copied to the clipboard

5. User can then paste the result in the edit box of the Captcha edit field

This feature would greatly benefit screen reader users, reducing barriers to web accessibility and improving overall browsing experience.

I'm curious to know:

- Is this feature technically feasible with NVDA's current architecture?

- Are there any existing projects or initiatives exploring similar functionality?

- Would this feature align with NVDA's development priorities and goals?

I'd appreciate any feedback, insights, or discussions on this proposal.

I've not used the alphas yet but, judging by the comments on them so far, I can't see this being immediately doable. You could call out to an external service until and if local models are good enough I suppose ...

Hello. I am not a developer, so I don't know how it is done, but there is an add-on that uses the Be My Eyes APIs. You can check out this add-on; it can work even if Be My Eyes is not installed on the device. I have provided the add-on information below; you can download it from the add-on store if you wish. Thank you for sharing that, much appreciated. I have downloaded it from the GitHub repository. I am still trying to get used to using the addon. I have changed some input gestures, specially the one that is used to recognize the object in focus. I also tried using the chat feature that seems to work great but I had challenges copying it’s last response to my clipboard so that I could read it on notepad.

"It can also be downloaded from the addon store (or extension store).
To copy the final result to the clipboard, you can assign a shortcut from the input gestures.
In my opinion, it doesn't perform well in the 'I am not a robot' tests you mentioned.
However, I believe it will read well if some modifications are made to it or if a new addon is developed.
I had heard there were similar extensions for Chrome in the past, but they tend to be costly.
I'd be very happy if the addon was useful to you.

This is a very promising addon, however I tried on multiple websites where there was an image Captcha and not even on one of them I got the Captcha correct with the help of this addon. All the websites say: Captcha entered is Incorrect.

I double check the Captcha result, check which letters are in CAPS etc. and then enter it in the edit field for the Captcha. So far 3 websites, even after refreshing and retrying to generate the Captcha recognition, failed to get the Captcha to pass and let me through to the log in for the website.

GUESS I am stuck with Be My Eyes for Windows to help me solve the Captcha. However, your effort in guiding me to this addon is much appreciated, thank you!

Yes, the addon can't quite read the 'I am not a robot' tests well. However, since it uses the Be My Eyes API, I thought it would be on the same level.

Hello. Attention that Be My Eyes forbids the use of the service’s login credentials to log in through third-party services, such as CloudVision, for example, as it considers them insecure — to the point of blocking access and requiring a password change in order to log in again after the automatic blocking for improper use. In fact, once I received a threat of account banning if I continued trying to log in through those other third-party services such as CloudVision, making it seem to be illegal to talk about these kinds of add-ons here in this group. Then, up to now, neither the artificial intelligence of Be My Eyes nor any of the other artificial intelligences I have tested, such as Gemini, Copilot, ChatGPT, among others, have ever been very good for solving captchas, even when trying to read or share screens containing captchas for a possible solution of them, for example... Thank you.

Hello. I have never received such information. And I believe the add-on is legal, as being listed as an official add-on in the NVDA Add-ons Store suggests that it is legal. Currently, dozens of illegal synthesizer add-ons cannot enter the store for this reason. If it is not legal, I apologize for that. Thank you for informing me.

Here is what Perplexity, an AI chat bot, says about this service and why you don't need to be logged into anything.

The Cloude Vision NVDA add-on uses the service visionbot.ru, which integrates recognition technologies from Google, Microsoft, and Be My AI. The user does not need to be logged into these external services because Cloude Vision itself acts as an intermediary service that handles the requests to these AI providers.
Essentially, Cloude Vision sends the images or screen content to the visionbot.ru backend, which performs the image analysis using its configured AI providers anonymously on behalf of the user. This setup allows users to use powerful AI recognition without needing separate accounts or direct logins to Google, Microsoft, or Be My Eyes services. If users want to access some features like asking a question to Be My AI specifically, then logging into Be My Eyes is required in the add-on settings, but for the standard image recognition features, no login is needed.
This proxy-like approach is common in third-party AI integrations, where the add-on developer registers and manages API access keys and quotas with the AI providers, abstracting this complexity away from end-users and enabling use without individual logins. github+1

To block what? Cloud vision? I just asked Perplexity and Cloud Vision,
not the add-on, is an AI description service available to the general
public and it is obviously what the add-on uses.

Hi all,
I think one way to make sense of this is treating Cloud Vision and similar add-ons as an intermediary that accesses certain services on the user's behalf through various ways (including using keys and tokens to access generative AI services). In theory, this can be done in a number of ways:
1. The add-on uses a bot-like way to access AI services, using API keys and tokens that is different than a human user. From the perspective of AI service providers, the traffic coming from NVDA add-ons are classified as bots. In some cases, this practice is frowned upon.
2. An add-on can use a human user's API key and token, essentially fooling the AI service provider to believe that a real person is using their services. In turn, the AI service provider would notice a huge number of queries made by a user or two, skewing the traffic in favor of these "users". In short, a single user (account) is using their services, with queries coming from all sorts of IP addresses.
What makes the picture complicated is resource usage of AI - each query made by someone causes AI hardware (such as neural processing units (NPU's) to go to work, retrieve data and run models with billions of parameters, run algorithms based on probability and statistics to recognize patterns, then generate a suitable response that sounds okay. All of this operation involves heat, electricity, water, land, and careful control of temperature to give you what you want (the other thing that is important is quality of data curated to train various models and the accuracy of the algorithms coded by both humans and algorithms). Even running a query locally (without going around the internet because ChatGPT and other services are cloud-based) involves heat, electricity, data storage, and cooling to drive NPU's to perform several trillion operations per second (TOPS) on your computer (I won't go into some advantages and downsides of local AI work as this is venturing toward off-topic territory).

Maybe so, but I did perhaps thirty or more trial descriptions
yesterday and didn't have one failure. I am not convinced that the
problem you have isn't a problem on your system or a problem with your
Internet connection.

"It's not a daily problem that happens with frequent use. If you use the addon in a standard way for 2-3 months, you may sometimes notice error messages. In the past, I also thought it was caused by me, but when I asked in local groups, I received information that Be My Eyes does not want its own APIs to be used by other services. It is not a problem that will occur with your usage.
The service simply breaks down and fixes itself.
I think you can use the extension as much as you want; it doesn't cause a problem. However, if Be My Eyes sends an alert, consider imposing a restriction. I have never received such a notification or email from Be My Eyes.

The idea of an integrated AI solver is a natural and appealing solution to this problem but there's a fundamental challenge that makes this approach a difficult long-term strategy. One of the problems with an automated CAPTCHA solver specifically designed for accessibility needs is that if it is reliably effective, then it will eventually also be used for non-accessibility needs. The organisations that run these CAPTCHA servers keep a very close eye on automated techniques and when they find one that is effective, they make small changes to the CAPTCHA challenge to break them. Source: I used to work for such an organisation and fully half the company was dedicated to detection and breaking of automated solvers.

This constant billion-dollar cat-and-mouse game means that any development effort would be a continuous, resource-intensive battle. It's why we believe the most effective long-term solution is advocacy: encouraging and pressuring websites to adopt modern, accessible alternatives to visual CAPTCHAs.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! I completely understand the security concerns companies have with automating CAPTCHA solving. It's a delicate balance between accessibility and security.

I recall a similar feature years, I mean years back in JAWS, where Alt+P would analyze a graphic, like a CAPTCHA, and present the result in a virtual window. That was quite handy!

I'm currently using the CloudVision addon, but have concerns around CloudVision's accuracy and reliability.
