Hi all,

I tried NVDA 2025.3 and the current snapshot on Win 11 Enterprise with Outlook 2024 Classic.

When i have the message list in focus i see the message. after 1-2 seconds i just see the cc or to field.

when i arrow down this happens again.

First i see the normal behaviour and after 1-2 seconds the braille display changes to the cc or to field.

When i try NVDA 2025.2 this doesn't happen and i see the normal line that is also announced by NVDA.

Greetings,

Simon

Hello:

Exactly. I reported this problem here, but they did not respond. I hope it is being investigated, because those of us who used Outlook had two alternatives to avoid the problem:
1. Use the CTRL+up and down arrows keys to scroll and the problem did not occur, although this has its consequences (such as marking everything as read or unread for NVDA, depending on the message in which it is done).
2, and drastic decision. Change email clients to one like Thunderbird, among other email clients.

As you say, with NVDA 2025.2 it doesn't happen, something that I also warned about (something must have been touched in the current version which seriously affected a braille line within Outlook Classic; the difference is that my version is from Microsoft 365, but I have the same problem).

Greetings.

That is the third choice. Use the previous NVDA version, in which case,
the problem doesn't occur. If people do update, before doing so, they
should always create a backup of the version they are currently using if
they haven't already. I am beginning to talk about that more where it
fits into discussions. This should be emphasized in NVDA training
materials and in the user guide. Also, during the update, I think those
updating should see a screen advising them to create an update if they
haven't and to copy the current configuration as part of the update.

It has already been said either here or in another widely used NVDA
e-mail list by at least one person technically very knowledgeable bout
NVDA, that downgrading doesn't necessarily go well. If you have a
backup, no downgrading is necessary. Maybe, if I talk about this
enough, enough attention will be given that there will be concrete
changes. In my opinion, this is a very important and largely neglected
issue.

Not only should you recommend making a copy, NVDA should allow you to
make copies of everything (there are no people as tech-savvy). Going to
AppData, Roaming, nvda, and starting to make a copy from there without
the user knowing exactly which copy, like the dictionary files, that's a
problem. However, if there was a wizard that would do this by giving the
translation of the elements to be included in the copy, people could
make copies without a problem. I know there are plugins that allow this,
but this should already be integrated, in my opinion. I am a simple user
and I am aware of these things out of necessity (but with NVDA it
becomes like an "obligation" for the user, you have to admit). So I hope
this is thought out and that at least NVDA gives the option to make a
full copy of the user's settings, rather than having to do it manually
(I repeat: not all of us deal with technology).

I make portable copies before updating for security (to avoid these
errors and be able to use a portable copy), but NVDA does not show any
recommendation to make a portable copy before even updating, and I don't
see that very well. Okay, other screen readers may not do it either if
they are updated, but that would leave NVDA ahead—is my opinion.

Greetings.

Hi Sergio,

Another possibility would be downgrading to NVDA 2025.2 for the time being.

That is what i have done over here.

That may be, but if you make a portable version of NVDA, and you tell it
to copy the current configuration, everything, speech dictionaries,
add-ons, settings, everything is copied into the portable version.

Hi Gene and Sergio,

That is what i have done.
I guess i have done that a few times over the years.
I also try to do not too many customisations.
I also sometimes test things before installing.
For example when you load the installer you have a temporary copy running.
So you can try a few things first.
Or you can use a portable copy as you said.

Greetings from the IT department,
Simon

Hi,

I use both, depending on what i want to do or test.

But back to the topic.
Fortunately it is something that can be reproduced.
I haven't figured that out yesterday, because at home i use thunderbird.

I can also create an issue on github if needed/wanted.
But maybe there is already one.

Simon

In fact, it would be nice if they told us something here... although,
like I said, I reported this and received no response (it was because of
this list).
Let's hope someone answers us and tells us if this is already on GitHub
or if we should publish it (well... more like "if you should publish
it", because I'm terrible at using GitHub).

Hi All,

I also have had issues with the Classic version of Outlook with my Braille display. What I eventually discovered was that turning off the Reading Pane that pops up when F6 is pressed resolved the issue. This can be done by doing the following:

1. Press Alt then V to go to the View tab.
2. Tab to View Settings and press Enter.
3. Tab to Other Settings and press Enter.
4. Tab seven or so times until you come to a set of radio buttons. The choices are Right, Bottom or Off. At least on my system, Right was checked by default.
5. Select the Off radio button, then press Enter to save your changes in that dialog. Press the OK button again, and you should be all set.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, this is not a global setting, and has to be set for every individual folder. It can technically be done for every folder by applying the current view to all folders, but I don't recommend it as other settings may be impacted. For example, my Sent Items folder is normally set to show me the To column, but when I applied the settings for every folder, the From column was displayed instead. It is possible to reset the order though if necessary.

Hope this helps.

Yours Sincerely,
Kelly John Sapergia

Interestingly you can hit f6 and you land in the message.

Hi Simon,

I believe there are two areas where you have to turn off the reading pane. One is the Message Preview item in the View menu, as well as the one I mentioned. For me, turning off the one in the Other Settings dialog under View Settings caused the pane to not appear when F6 was pressed.

Thanks for the info.
So i looked at the second place where this is.
Translating it from german into english is not easy but i found where it is.
Those settings, nvda tells me, are unavailable.
So i assume it is already turned off.
But i will recheck tomorrow.
