Hi all,

Braille Essentials 26.05.2 is now available from NV Access add-on store. This is a major release that requires NVDA 2025.3.3.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • BrailleExtender and Braille Essentials are incompatible with each other. You must UNINSTALL OR DISABLE BrailleExtender prior to installing and using Braille Essentials. As you can see from the changelog below, Braille Essentials has diverged from BrailleExtender and work is under way to diverge these add-ons further. To emphasize this point, an installation message will be presented if BrailleExtender is installed or enabled prior to installing or updating to Braille Essentials 26.05.2.
  • NVDA 2025.3.3 or later is required. If you haven’t, I strongly urge EVERYONE to upgrade to at least NVDA 2025.3.3, or if possible, to 2026.1.
  • Work is under way to modernize the add-on source code. This work is led by Dalen (current maintainer of Object Location Tones and other add-ons).

Changelog:

* NVDA 2025.3.3 or later is required.

* Removed add-on features, commands, and settings included in NVDA screen reader, including speech interrupt when scrolling on same line (2022.3), announce character when routing braille cursor (2024.4), and say current line while scrolling in (2025.1).

* Document formatting tags are now based on NVDA screen reader tags (tag/dots 1-2-4-7-8, tag, dots 1-4-5-7-8).

* Added an installation message informing that BrailleExtender must be disabled when installing Braille Essentials (these add-ons are incompatible).

If you find bugs or have suggestions, please create an issue on Braille Essentials GitHub repository. Pull requests are also welcome (please note that code refactoring is in progress so pull requests may not be reviewed for some time).

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Joseph

Dear Joseph,
I have tried to download the add-on from the store but I got a message that says "failed to download this addon."
I wonder if my windows 10 is the reason for this. Does it require windows 11 as a minimum OS requirement?

Hello:

I also get the error "Install error" and also NVDA crashes after the error and restarts, throwing a Windows error.
I have Windows 11 updated to the latest version.

Greetings.

Hi all,

IMPORTANT UPDATE: the problem was traced to wrong module import in the installation tasks module, affecting NVDA 2026.1. This does not depend on Windows version in use. This should be resolved in Braille Essentials 26.05.3. Apologies for the critical failure on our (mine and Dalen’s) part.

Cheers,

Joseph
