Hi Mike,

The library may prevent you from downloading and running software even if you do so from a USB as NVDA allows you to run it portable. However, windows does come with its own inbuilt screen reader called narrator you can start narrator with the keyboard shortcut control plus Windows plus enter. This should then take you to the welcome screen for narrator and you can use the arrow  keys along with either numpad zero or the caps lock  key to navigate pressing notepad 0+ K  should turn on help mode allowing you to press keys along with the numpad  0 key to see what they do. I hope this goes some way  to helping

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the community! :)

To download NVDA, go to this web page:

https://www.nvaccess.org/download/

and click on the download button. The file will be saved to your
Downloads folder by default.

After the file has downloaded, open the Downloads folder, locate the
nvda_2025.3.3.exe file and double-click on it. The NVDA installation
process will begin. Follow the prompts and away you go! :)

Installation is the easy part. Learning how to use a screen reader is
more difficult. But it's like learning to ride a bicycle. Once you
get the hang of it, it will become second nature. Here's a link to
the User Guide:

https://download.nvaccess.org/documentation/userGuide.html

Read Section 2.7 for links to some learning resources.

There's also a new NVDA add-on called NVDA Coach. Haven't tried it
myself, but it sounds promising.

HTH! :)

If you are at work, it is very  likely that you will need the IT person to download and install nvda.  You do not have the right or permission to do things on  the network of which you are  just a user, not an administrator.

Hi Mike,

As well as the links John provided, particularly https://www.nvaccess.org/download/ to download NVDA, and following on from what others have said about potentially being unable to install software on the work or library computers, I thought I'd offer a couple of thoughts:

1) If you need the IT people at work or the library to install the software, they are most welcome to - it is free of charge for anyone, and we have a page of resources to help them with any documentation or policies they need: https://www.nvaccess.org/corporate-government/

2) If you follow the steps in the Quick Start Guide on how to download and install NVDA: NVDA 2025.3.3 User Guide - you can do that on your home computer if you don't already, and from there, you can follow these steps to create a portable copy onto a memory stick: https://download.nvaccess.org/documentation/userGuide.html#CreatingAPortableCopy - you may then be able to take that in to the library and run it without needing to install it.  It's always worth talking to them as they may be willing to install NVDA as well.

If you do need any help, please don't hesitate to ask!

Kind regards

Quentin
