Hi folks

I am working with Outlook Classic in which I have several mail accounts.

I have a problem with the display in brail for only that account, the other 3 accounts are behaving properly.

When I scroll through my list of mails, speech is behaving normally but brail does not, after one second, my brail display gets jumpy and mostly only nvda-...@nvaccess.org or my own mail address is shown instead of the name and subject of the mail as it should.

I have already maximised the screen and the weird thing is, this only happens with my mail accounts e-mail list.

Regards

Davy

Davy,

Using Windows 11, MS365 Outlook Classic, NVDA 26.1 beta 4, and a Braille Edge connected via USB, I just arrowed through about 50 emails with no problems.

What versions are you using and which braille display?

Richard

Thank you for your answer, I just updated to NVDA 2025.3.3 and I must admit, the brail view is much more stable now, sometimes it still jumps away but after a second or less the right way to display the mails is restored again!

And after a restart of NVDA and my system, the problem is back again.

What have you done to troubleshoot. I might have missed the message, however in case I did not, can you list what steps you took for troubleshooting so far?

Hi,

What you’re describing — speech reading the correct message but Braille jumping to your email address or the nvdausers list — usually means Outlook Classic is exposing extra UI elements for that one account, and NVDA is locking onto the wrong field in the message list. Since your other accounts behave normally, the issue is almost certainly tied to the view settings or column layout for that specific mailbox.

Here are a few screenreaderfriendly things you can try:

1. Reset the View for just that account’s inbox

This often fixes Braille jumping or showing the wrong line.

1.

Go to the problem inbox.

2.

Press Alt + V for the View tab.

3.

Press R for Reset View.

4.

Press Enter to confirm.

Test the Braille display again.

2. Make sure the Reading Pane isn’t interfering

Sometimes the Reading Pane causes NVDA to focus on the wrong UI element.

1.

Press Alt + V.

2.

Press P for Reading Pane.

3.

Choose Off and press Enter.

If Braille stabilizes, you can turn the pane back on later if you prefer.

3. Check the message list columns

If a column is added or reordered, NVDA may latch onto the wrong field.

1.

Press Alt + V.

2.

Press C for View Settings.

3.

Press C again for Columns.

4.

Review the list with Tab and Arrow keys.

If something unusual is selected (like “Account” or “Email Address”), remove it.

4. Try switching NVDA’s document formatting temporarily

This can help confirm whether NVDA is reading the wrong UI element.

1.

Press NVDA + Control + D to toggle document formatting.

2.

Move through the message list again.

If Braille behaves differently, it’s a focustracking issue.

5. If nothing changes, the account profile may be corrupted

This happens occasionally with Outlook Classic.

You can test this without deleting anything:

1.

Press Windows + R.

2.

Type outlook.exe /profiles and press Enter.

3.

Create a temporary test profile and add only the problem account.

If Braille works normally there, the issue is with the original profile’s view settings. I hope this helps.

Hi Davy,

Great to hear it — glad that did the trick. The reading pane can definitely cause some odd focus and navigation behavior, so it makes sense that fixing that cleared things up.

If anything else starts acting strange, feel free to reach out anytime. I, as well as others on the list are always happy to help. 😊

Hi Justin

I was just doubting because, with any version of Jaws which I have, there was no problem at all. Maybe good for the devs that they know that this can be worth a fix in NVDA then.

But please no critics here and I did not mean Jaws is good and NVDA is not, or the other way around, I am a very satisfied NVDA user. But for my profession on the phone I have to use Jaws because of the scripting possibilities for really unaccessible professional phone managing programs like we use in our municipality.

Regards
