Dear list members,
I’m reaching out because I’m interested in joining this mailing list, but I’ve run into a bit of a technical hurdle.
Currently, I am signed into my Google account, and whenever I attempt to join the group or manage my subscription, the system defaults to using my Google ID/Gmail address. However, for my mailing list and group communications, I actually prefer to use a different, non-Google email account.
Could you please advise on the best way to subscribe using an external email address? Is there a way to "invite" my other account, or a specific registration page that doesn't require a Google login to complete the signup?
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
Mujtaba Merchant

I asked the same sort of question. There is a way to tie a non google address to your groups but you need to see the membership settings for that group. I can’t see how to change it on mine either.

Thank you so much for the reply! It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one who has scratched their head over this.
I actually tried a bit of a workaround: I unsubscribed my Gmail account and then sent a blank email to the subscription address from the non-Google ID I actually want to use. However, I didn’t get a confirmation right away and—admittedly—I panicked a bit about missing out on the group messages! I ended up joining back with my default Gmail ID just to make sure I stayed in the loop.
I’ll keep an eye on my other inbox to see if that "blank email" request eventually processes. If you happen to stumble upon where those elusive membership settings are hidden, please let me know!

I did associate it with my google account. How do I find the membership settings to change it?

Hi Martina,
Thank you for sharing your experience and the suggestion!
To be honest, that logic doesn't make much material sense to me. If my goal is to sign up for a Google Group specifically because I don't want to use a Google or Gmail ID, it feels counterintuitive to create yet another Google account just to subscribe.
The objective in my case is to use a completely non-Google/Gmail ID—specifically an Outlook.com account—to send and receive messages from the list directly, without it being tethered to a Google profile or login. It seems like it should be a straightforward process to just "subscribe" via an external email, but Google certainly doesn't make it easy!
I'll keep digging to see if there's a way to truly decouple the two.

I've asked two different AI bots about this and they both say the same thing. Since this is AI material, you may want to verify it. I am not interested enough in the subject to do so, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it is correct. Here is what Chat.GPT says:
Yes — you can use a non-Google email address with a Google Groups
account, and it works quite well.
Here are the practical details:
Using Google Groups without a Gmail address
You can join and participate in Google Groups using any email
address, such as:
Outlook / Hotmail, Yahoo, Proton Mail, Fastmail, custom domain
addresses.
You simply need to create a Google Account using your existing
email address instead of creating a new Gmail address.
How it works
When you sign up for a Google Account, choose:
“Use my current email address instead”
This lets you register your existing email as your Google login.
My concluding comment:
In short, you need a Google account with your nonGoogle address.

Hi Gene,
Thank you for sharing this tip! Even though it is AI-generated, it seems to align with what Martina was suggesting earlier.
I will definitely experiment with this later tonight to see if I can get my Outlook address recognized by the system without it turning into a full-blown Gmail migration. It’s a bit of a workaround to create a Google account for a non-Google address just to join a group, but if it works, it’ll be worth it.
I'll let you know if the AI was actually on the mark!
