I will still be calling Microsoft Accessability but wanted to share something in case anyone else has this experience. My daughter explained that the reason the files I receive from this one person, and sometimes others, are protected is because they are using an older version of Word and because mine is the latest my version thinks their files are spam so protects them.

I at least now have a workaround with the suggestions that have been made to make it possible to work on a word file that I am either writing or have received.

Thanks again for all of the help I received with this question.

Besty, regardless of version, files are often protected when received by email.  I just sent myself a file and when it came back I had to unprotect it.  It happens so often the process for me is automatic.
But regarding your reading issue, I get best results with the document in print layout from the View   Menu.

Hi,

No, the reason is, if you download a document or it comes from an external source, Word will always protect it.

It doesn’t matter the version of Word.

All the best
