Hello everyone,

With the release of NVDA version 2026.1, we know that NVDA will transition to 64-bit, and as a result, 32-bit SAPI5 voices will no longer be supported.

There are many users, myself included, who currently depend on these voices for our daily workflow. Similar to the bridge solution provided in JAWS, will a similar workaround or solution be provided for NVDA as well?

Is there an existing roadmap regarding this matter?

Kind regards,

Selçuk Uçar

Merhaba Selcuk,

Yes, Michael Curran, one of the NV access developers, works on the bridge for the sapi4 and 5, 32 bit.

It is planned for the NVDA 2026.1.

All the best,

Zvonimir

Hi Zvonimir,
Thanks for this good news.
Like dear Selçuk, I also use the 32 bit Turkish SAPI5 synthesizer.
Kind regards,

This is great news!
I hope we see good results soon.
However, I have one small concern.
Will this bridge affect NVDA's serial operation?
Ultimately, I'm really curious to know to what extent enabling a fully 64-bit program to interact with 32-bit sounds via a bridge will affect the screen reader's performance.

Hi,

NVDA’s performance depends on several factors, including how long it takes for a 64-bit NVDA to talk to a 32-bit synthesizer via a bridge (which is now part of NVDA, by the way, and if things align, might be part of 2026.1 beta 1 (later)), the inner workings of the speech engine, among others.

Cheers,

Joseph

Update: thos is included in today's alpha. It can be tested.

Hello.
Thank you very much for this wonderful news.
I downloaded and tested the alpha version, and I think the results are quite excellent.
All my SAPI 5 32-bit voices worked very quickly, but only one voice that was installed spoke in the old version of NVDA; now it appears in the voice list but does not speak.
It's a very old synthesizer; I can use it in JAWS, but even though it appears in the voice list in NVDA, it does not speak.
I think the bridge will be further developed; thank you again for such an improvement.

Hello,

"I started testing as soon as I read the email. Even though it is the first alpha version to support 32-bit audio, it is quite successful. I am using the Acapela İpek synthesizer and I haven't encountered any performance-related issues so far.

Have you tried switching off the wasapi support in the Speech settings
of NVDA? This applies to sapi5 synthesizers only. For sapi4
synthesizers, the wasapi option is located in the Advanced settings of NVDA.

I'm also very thankful of the 32-bit speech synthesizer support. I have
tested the new alpha with 32-bit Mikropuhe 5.1 sapi5. Everything has
worked perfectly, except the announcement of capital letters with
different voice pitch.

Thanks and hope this helps,

Veli

Hello.
Yes, I tried turning off the setting you mentioned, but it didn't help.
But that's not a big deal, as other applications have had adaptation issues with this synthesizer.
However, the performance is truly excellent compared to the first alpha version, and I'd like to thank the developers again for their support.

I also immediately downloaded the latest Alpha and tried. My old 32 bit SAPI and even some SAPI 4 synthesisers work as well as they used to. This is fantastic. Very well done! I am thrilled about this.

Kind regards

I thought SAPI 4 wouldn't be supported.  I'm glad it is since I use a legal copy of Via Voice which I got with another program.

I found, while using Via Voice that the letter o makes a clicking sound when it is spoken when typing or reading letter by letter.  I don't know if that is a general SAPI 4 problem or not.  Also, SAPI 4 Eloquence makes some sort of errors when I type.  NVdA does nothing for perhaps ten seconds, the error sound is heard twice, then the program works again.  I use the log so seldom that I don't recall what setting to use and where the personal information is that shouldn't be included when sending the part of the log with the error information.
