A visually impaired friend of mine who teaches technology gave me these steps to make a file that is protected not to be protected any more. I hope this is helpful for others.

1. Press control F.

2. Tab one time.

3. Press space.

4. Now press escape.

Hi Betsy,

I think you're confusing the Show or Hide feature with Protected View.

Show or Hide refers to displaying or hiding paragraph markers, tabs,
etc. Btw, you can toggle it on or off by pressing Ctrl+*.

Protected View is a read-only view where most editing features are
disabled. Word activates Protected View when the user opens a
document from an unknown location. It's a safety mechanism designed
to protect the user from viruses and malware. But it can also get in
the way as you've discovered.

For the full story (including instructions on how to turn it on or
off), please read this Microsoft Support article:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/what-is-protected-view-d6f09ac7-e6b9-4495-8e43-2bbcdbcb6653

Finally, the article offers the following advice for screen reader users:

When you are in protected view, editing is locked, so you can't cursor
around the document as expected. However, if you need to navigate
through a document in Protected View with a screen reader, you can
press F7 to turn on caret browsing. This action should allow you to
navigate through the text without being in edit mode.

HTH! :)

No, easier way is to press F6 in the document, tab once to Enable Editing, and hit Enter.

All the best
