I know in most situations, you would not launch NVDA while Jaws 2025 is running.
But, suddenly I had no speech with NVDA or Narrator, but Jaws was working fine.
So, I launched NVDA while Jaws was running and heard "Windows U" but no speech from NVDA.
This morning, I installed a Windows update, which made no difference in and of itself.
After a few reboots, and one over night shut down, I discovered that I couldn't get Jaws to speak through the laptop speakers, or a pair of USB speakers I have plugged in.
After checking sound settings, I reset the sounds to defaults.
Now everything speaks through the speakers or the Logitech USB headset. So, all is fine.
However, and this is why I wrote all that background, even though NVDA is speaking normally either through my USB headphones or Speakers, when I launch NVDA with Jaws running, I still hear "Windows U" and then NVDA starts speaking.
I know Windows+U is the hotkey to launch Accessibility Settings, but I'm not pressing it, nor do I end up in those settings.
It is just new verbiage that I had never heard before.
I did update to the July version of Jaws, so maybe that is it.
IN any case, I spent a lot of hours trouble shooting the sound issue which now is resolved, for the time being anyway.
I was just curious about the speaking of "windows u"…

Well, Narrator has never said that for me.
NVDA didn't used to, but now it says Windows U.
Not a big deal, just odd when something changes with no clear reason.

Hi,
This happens because NVDA calls upon a specific part of Ease of Access, informing Windows of its entrance (execution). And, for whatever reason, the way to do that is pressing Windows +U (as in Utility Manager, an obscure (or not so obscure) utility that managed access technologies in really old Windows releases) as prescribed by Microsoft (I won’t go into details of our (NVDA contributors’) mixed feelings about that, nor the debates I and some NVDA folks had with Microsoft engineers about what accessibility is because MS products constantly broke it (that’s mildly putting it)).
Cheers,
Joseph

Narrator's always said U whenever I launch NVDA.
