Hello NumFOCUS mentors and community,

My name is Saiteja Ponnam, and I am applying for GSoC 2026 with Matplotlib.

So far I have:
• Opened my first PR to Matplotlib (vector output simplification for fill_between)
• Started exploring the codebase (collections, backends, path simplification)
• Selected "Overlay API" as my primary project interest

I am currently building a small interactive overlay prototype (hover highlight layer) to validate architecture ideas before writing the proposal.

I would appreciate any guidance on:
• Whether Overlay API is still a high-priority idea
• Preferred direction (event-driven vs artist-layer approach)
• Relevant parts of codebase I should explore
