Dear all, we are looking for mentors for the WoCCode program. Please pass this along to your networks or interested parties.

WoCCode is a peer-mentoring program that seeks to unite Women of Color (WoC) and other members of minoritized groups, to battle feelings of isolation and marginalization that are prevalent in educational institutions and industry settings. Using a dedicated Slack space and cohorts of 4-5 people, we will create space for WoC and members of other minoritized groups to engage, receive feedback, and troubleshoot issues around their participation in open source software communities. We will also host monthly 1 hour webinars, featuring peer-lead instructional tutorials and talks by professionals from academia and the software industry. Our first kick-off webinar will be in January 2021.

Mentorship responsibilities include:

  • Moderating the Slack channels for 1-2 cohorts. You do not need to answer any and all questions from the group, but rather direct people to resources if everyone is stumped.

  • Provide professional advice if asked for by members of your assigned cohorts.

  • Assist in identifying and scheduling guest webinar speakers, and participate in as many webinars as possible (once per month)

  • Help maintain the WoCCode wiki on Github

Mentors will be compensated with an honorarium from the Astropy Project. A flyer for the WoCCode program can be found at http://bit.ly/woccode-flyer-2020a

To apply to be a mentor:
(1) Fill out the standard Google form application for the program (https://forms.gle/yK35NWshMTA4vLzY6) and use the final essay question to describe your interest in being a mentor

(2) Send an email to woc....@gmail.com alerting us about your application

We aim to contact potential mentors by December 20, 2020.
