Hi everyone,

We're happy to be kicking off the DISC Program's Inclusive Community Practices Working Group, starting with a volunteer orientation!

If you can, please join us next Tuesday, July 30 at 10:30am Central (GMT +5) for an overview of the working group goals and plans, plus ways you can get involved.

Our draft working group charter is here.

We'll take notes during the call and make them available on the DISC mailing list, as well, for folks who want to be involved but can't make the orientation call.

Thanks, and we look forward to the community's participation in this effort!

Best,
Gina

Thank you, Gina!

I'll be at a conference and unfortunately, I won't be able to join the call. But I'm looking forward to the notes.

Cheers,

How long is the call? Could we potentially get a cal invite for this (that way I can block on my cal)?

Great, thanks Gina! If you were to share through Google cal that'd be additionally great in the case there are scheduling changes. But I can also just add for me!

Hello all,

I am new in the mailing list so I will introduce myself a little bit.

I am Oier Echaniz, from Basque Country, Spain. I am doing a PhD in Medical data and computing.I have been involved in the Python Community since 2014, when we created the local Basque Python User group (pyss.org) and I have been the chair since then. With this team we co organized EuroPython 2015 and 2016, and now we are organizing EuroScipy 2019. Organizing EuroScipy I heard about this group and I decided to join. Mainly because I am disabled/handicaped/sick person/... I think diversity groups should increase the focus on inclusion. for instance ¿why we care about having veggie food in conferences but we do not care if the tables are reachable for wheel chairs? I like this focus of inclusion: https://butyoudontlooksick.com/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/ (if you read the article: we should give free spoons to needed people in conferences).

I am interested in being a volunteer and try to help and mostly knowing how can I help. I do not know if I will be able to join the call, but I will do my best to join or I will read the notes.

Regards,
Oier

Hi all,

I am looking forward to help. However, I am not able to attend to the meeting. I will be flying back to US on Tuesday. I will catch up reading the notes.
Count on me!
I left some comments in the document. Hope these help.

Cheers

Wow, gang, I am apparently just very bad at conveying the details of this meeting. (😭😭😭)

It's helpfully been brought to my attention that 10:30am Central is actually GMT -5 (minus not plus).

To try to avoid any further confusion, I've just gone ahead and added the mailing list to my calendar event. Thanks for your patience with me!

Hi Oier,

Welcome to the DISC community! Thanks for introducing yourself. Based on your comments, I thought you might be interested in contributing to the DISCOVER Cookbook, which is a resource for organizing inclusive events. (GitHub repo is here)

We talk about mobility access in this section — please submit an issue or PR if you have further resources and ideas we can include!

Sincerely,
Gina

Hi Gina!
I seem to have put this meeting in my calendar for 10am central, not 10:30am central :( thats my bad - and so I am double booked for our meeting and hence will not be able to attend.
I am very interested to get involved! Will it be recorded?
I hope I am still able to participate in spite of missing the meeting. If so, please let me know how - or just keep me in the loop.
Sorry and thanks in advance.

Happy Tuesday!

Yikes my team meeting is getting bumped to 10:15am CDT so I’m afraid I won’t be able to join after all. I’d like to +1 the recording question or if possible inquire about there being another orientation?

Regardless, thats a bit too late for me (as its past midnight here).
Please do take notes and record if possible!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Leonie and I’m a member of the DISC committee. My task this year is to establish good practices for volunteer involvement in the DISC work. So great to get to know some of you on the call yesterday!

It looks like we’ll form groups for the three tasks at hand (literature research, qualitative survey, quantitative survey) – once those groups are formed I’d like to be of help for project and task management. I can help set up a plan, break the task down into digestible chunks and distribute the work to as many helping hands as we find. I’d be very thankful if you would be willing to involve me in the working groups this way so we can find out how to best get as many people involved in the DISC work as we can.

I also have a question and would welcome any feedback: We’d like to give credit to volunteers and provide them with at least some recognition for their work. What kind of recognition/credit would you be happiest about?

Thanks a lot in advance and I look forward to working with you all!

Best,

Leonie
