Hi everyone,

I’m Sakshi, a pre-final year CS student currently exploring contributions under the NumFOCUS umbrella for GSoC.

My background is primarily in Python and data-centric systems. Recently, I’ve been diving into Zarr to better understand chunked array storage, codecs, and performance trade-offs. I’ve been going through the Zarr documentation and specifications and have just submitted a small documentation PR upstream related to filters vs compression as part of my learning process.

I’m now planning to go deeper into one of the NumFOCUS projects (likely Zarr or related data infrastructure projects) and would love guidance on:
- which repositories are most welcoming for first technical contributions beyond documentation
- whether there are any good starter issues, testing, or benchmarking tasks that would be useful at this stage

Looking forward to learning and contributing — thanks for maintaining such impactful projects!

Hi mentors,

I’m Prapti Patra, a 2nd year student from BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus planning to apply to Google Summer of Code under the NumFOCUS umbrella.

Over the last few months I’ve been sharpening my fundamentals (DSA) and building software mostly using Python, I am also comfortable in C/C++ and JavaScript. On the “tools & stack” side, I’m most familiar with:

  • Python: packaging, virtualenv/conda, type hints, pytest, documentation tooling
  • Web/dev stacks: React/Next.js, Node.js, REST APIs (FastAPI-style patterns)
  • Infra: Git/GitHub, CI (GitHub Actions), Docker, Linux
  • Data & systems: SQL basics, performance profiling/benchmarking

I was going through several NumFOCUS projects, and I was drawn to the possibility of contributing to AiiDA and the surrounding ecosystem.

What drew me to AiiDA specifically is the combination of (1) workflow automation, (2) provenance tracking, and (3) extensibility via plugins.  I also read about the ADES idea and it matches what I’ve seen in practice: automation + clean environments + structured data + sharing is what makes research move. I’m also curious about AiiDAlab and the onboarding experience, especially around setup and running jobs on remote resources.

I would love to contribute to this organization going forward. I would really appreciate guidance on-

  • Which repositories are most suited for initial technical contributions other than documentation?
  • Also are there any testing, benchmarking, or starter issues that would be beneficial at this point?
Thank you so much!

You will need to work with the AiiDA community directly. This list is for coordination of the food program not the individual projects.
