Hi,

I have a question about what is happening in this video at 00:06:16 -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ4p_Nt4uNA#t=376s.

In the discussion, there is a mention of the development of MOOCs involving a "big push towards analytics". What does this expression mean in the context of the discussion?.

Thanks!

Dear Avinash

I hope just developing a MOOC is not an end for a MOOC developer. It should go for analytics like benefitted number, certified, what is the reach of the course, demographic details, interested audience, any modifications needed and so on.

Dear Avinash

The instructors are discussing "big push analytics" from the technology perspective. Normally single server will become the centre of the college/university for providing the analytics of the online courses, where there is no structured format like starting date and end date. However, Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have definite structure defined by the course instructor. With the advent of technology, it becomes easy for the analytics (ike statistics, toppers list, certificate type, feedback, and downloads, feedback)  , though the strength of the participants is massive and open in MOOC.

Hapy Learning!

Dear Avinashji, I agree with Sudha Sivakumar. I can add one more point regarding this 'big push'. The creator of a MOOC may go ahead to measure the building of insight on the topic learned by a learner. Regards. -- Dr. Jyotirmoy Sengupta, Associate Professor, Pragjyotish College. Guwahati.

Dear All,

The  reference of "big push towards analytics" is underlining the importance of analytics tools in moocs. When the learners in moocs are large in number, the analytics tools become indispensable. This learning statistics of moocs should be transparent to learners. Here in SWAYAM / NPTEL also, we can access the data like number of candidates subscribed to a course, number of candidates registered for examination, the scores in assignment etc.

Dear Ravi Shankar,

You have rightly pointed out the importance of analytics in MOOCs. But the portal cannot have transparency in all the data because the identity of the participants cannot be revealed without their consent. By collaborating with each other in the discussion forum, I recommend you to form community of practice.

Dear Dr. Sudha,

The identity of the participants should not be revealed on a public platform, even after their consent. But the statistics like how many of them are senior faculties, how many of them are beginners, how many of them are of engineering and applied science background, how many of them have attended such MOOCs previously etc. may be shared in a MOOC.

I am not referring only this MOOC here. But I want to discuss, what should be our standard practice, while designing a learner-centric MOOC? Is such statistics are helpful anyway to the learners of a MOOC?

Best Regards,
Ravi Shankar Prasad

Dear sir
We are really happy for your continuous participation in DF in providing your insights.
In designing a learner-centric MOOC, it's important to prioritize learner privacy and confidentiality. While aggregated statistics about participant demographics such as experience level, academic background, and previous MOOC attendance can provide valuable insights for course design and customization that caters to the diverse needs and backgrounds of all participants.
