Dear all Learners :

My reflections are as below :

Structural Organization of the Forum

The DF had around 118 participants representing diverse profile with people at Professors, Associate Professors, Lecturers and so from Science, Language (English), Arts and Ayurvedic medical domains. Majority in the science stream. Most of them were 1st time MOOC learners. Few had previous exposure of MOOCs but have not availed LCM. Most seemed to have joined for FDP skills. DFM and TA attended almost every query generic as well as content related such as AQ, RQ and LbDs. DF-2023 serves more as clarification forum than a learner-to-learner centric interaction barring a few participants. This observation seems to have triggered the idea of Meet and Google Form for handling course delivery related query in 2024. The renewed orchestration in 2024 kept us focus on actual shared peer-learning. Idea of roping alumni in did the trick which the 2023 DF lacked. In fine, the DF-2023 looked more learner-Instructor (or DFM) centric. The LxI’s intended goal of Learner-to-learner interaction was visibly lacking. They invited course Alumni to take part as discussion.  Creating a weekly plan that will require an Alumni to spend around 90 minutes in a week to answer an unanswered query on the forum. Floating a google form to collect queries in 2024 LCM before live interaction was a great relief.

Observed Learner Engagement in the forum

Good to note that in the DF 2023 and 2024 both gets every comment (course related, topic taught or generic issues) responded to by the DFM)/TA. The DFM / TA / Instructor clarified for logical closure with additional inputs. The instant feedback on the part of DFM / TA brings back the attention. The Observation of Dr. Suman Dey, Assistant Prof., Department of English, Savitri Garg’s College, Kolkata seems to have had similar observation about the reflection spots as that of mine. Reflection brings in a crucial pause to recall the learnt and then advancing for a subsequent learning. There is an interesting question about the continued availability and accessibility of the present MOOC content even after course completion.

The concern expressed by a participant that giving list of resources may be ineffective. He held a view that making diverse resources available at the appropriate points in a course alongwith simple questions on each is more appropriate. This view was at variance with that of mine. Instructor is making an attempt to give you supplemental sources to navigate purely on optional basis. Making it part of course content may not be advisable and would drift the learner’s attention. Lxt is not an extra stuff, instead they are supplemental stuff for the learner for deeper and wider knowlede.

The observations of Ms. Abeetha about Lxt is similar to my observation since Lxt helps to learn more and is always followed by Assimilation Test.

Learners' focus to the discussion within LxI threads.

Learner to learner engagement is minimal in DF-2023. DF-2024 is fairly learner-to-learner centric interaction. Peer-learning by way of complimenting on some’s comments or disagreeing is visible in 2024 but the same was missing in DF-2023. The discussants in DF 2023 and 2024 both acknowledged the benefit of reflection spots. The participant did not offer experiential input useful for the other participants. There are more queries on course operation part in the LxI. The observation of Dr. Radhika of Ayurvedic Medical College, that LxI focus question is good to elevate misconception, it anchors the discussion. By the focus question as a learner, I am reading the content posting and interacting. It is also seemed that some participants have raised questions about the correctness of responses for which convincing replies have been offered by the LCM course team. Participants have commented that among the Lxt’s provided in the category of pre-recording, beautiful.ai.adhoc is useful. Canva has also been recommended for Audio-Video recording. OBS studio is best as it provides streaming for various platforms. For Post production that editing category edpuzzle is good.  The course team 2024 added more orchestic decision to make the course more learner centric. Orchestration has improved the current iteration. Almost all the participants have liked the course with some wanting to become a MOOC course creator while many others want to integrate.

Thanks,

Manoj Kr. Srivastava,

Greetings,

Here are my observations regarding the Discussion Forum from the last offering of the LCM course as compared to the current one:
1. Structural Organization of the Forum:
The Discussion Forum in the previous LCM offering appeared to be less organized compared to the current one. Despite clear instructions provided in the LxIs, learners created multiple threads, resulting in unnecessary clutter. However, I appreciate the proactive efforts of the current DFMs (Discussion Forum Moderators) in directing learners to the appropriate threads, thereby maintaining better structure.

2. Learner Engagement in the Forum:
Mr. Manoj Srivastava rightly pointed out that both the DFMs and TAs (Teaching Assistants) from the previous and current offerings respond to every comment, ensuring logical closure. However, I've noticed a difference in the current DFMs/TAs' approach. They not only acknowledge and respond but also actively encourage discussions within the forum. Their longer responses indicate a deeper engagement, pushing learners to think critically and use the forum as a platform for learning and mediation.

3. Learners' Focus on LxI Threads:
To analyse this aspect, I merely considered the number of interactions in the dedicated LxI thread each week. The data shows the following:
- LxI Week 1: 104 interactions
- LxI Week 2: 69 interactions
LxI Week 3: 60 interactions
LxI Week 4: 6 interactions
The noticeable decline in interactions from week 1 to week 2, and further from week 3 to week 4, is intriguing. It appears that learners shifted their focus from engaging in learner-to-learner interactions to primarily responding to the assigned tasks outlined in the module.

Thank you.

Dear Sir,
We appreciate your insightful observation highlighting the consistent and constructive engagement of both previous and current DFMs/TAs, fostering deep learner engagement and critical thinking within the forum. Potential reasons for decline shift of interaction could also be due to evolving priorities, not submitting the assignments on time, evolving course content, or varying learner engagement dynamics over the weeks. Reflecting on your past experience with this course, could you share insights into the most challenging or unclear concept you've encountered in this course? This would provide a deeper understanding of potential points of difficulty.

Dear all,

Please go through the following for the week 6 LxI

Comparison of Last Year's Course (2023) and Current Year's Course (2024) Discussion Forums:

  1. Structural Organization of the Forum:
    • 2023 (Last Year): The forum appeared less organized, with multiple threads created by learners, resulting in clutter. It seemed more instructor-centric, lacking learner-to-learner interaction.
    • 2024 (Current Year): Efforts were made to maintain better structure, with proactive guidance from DFMs in directing learners to appropriate threads. The forum seemed more learner-centric, with DFMs actively encouraging discussions and deeper engagement.
  2. Observed Learner Engagement in the Forum:
    • 2023 (Last Year): Learner engagement was present, but the forum served more as a clarification platform rather than a space for peer learning and interaction.
    • 2024 (Current Year): Learner engagement was deeper, with DFMs/TAs responding to comments and actively encouraging discussions. Learners were pushed to think critically and use the forum as a platform for mediation.
  1. Learners' Focus on LxI Threads:
    • 2023 (Last Year): Minimal learner-to-learner engagement was observed in LxI threads, with a focus on responding to assigned tasks rather than fostering discussion.
    • 2024 (Current Year): While there was initial engagement, a decline in interaction was observed over the weeks. Possible reasons include evolving priorities, late assignment submissions, or evolving course content dynamics.

Reflection:

  • The structural organization of the forum improved from the previous year to the current one, with more proactive guidance from DFMs and a shift towards learner-centricity.
  • Learner engagement deepened in the current year, with DFMs actively fostering discussions and critical thinking, contrasting with the previous year's more instructor-centric approach.
  • While initial engagement in LxI threads was observed in the current year, a decline in interaction over time suggests the need for continued efforts to sustain engagement and foster ongoing discussions.

Similarities and Differences in Peer Explanations:

In line with Manoj Srivastava's observation, Anthony Gomes noted improvements in the structural organization of the forum between the previous and current years. All recognized the efforts made by moderators to provide clearer instructions and direct participants to appropriate threads, resulting in a more organized forum experience.

While Manoj highlighted the consistent responsiveness of DFMs and TAs in both years, Anthony emphasized the increase in learner engagement in the current year. Unlike Manoj's observation, which focused on the logical closure provided by moderators, Anthony highlighted the deeper engagement and active encouragement of discussions within the forum, fostering a sense of community and collaborative learning among participants.

Greetings  Shanthi ,
Thank you for sharing the comparison between last year's and this year's Discussion Forums for Week 6 LxI. It's fascinating to see the evolution and improvements over time.

I appreciate the efforts made to enhance the structural organization of the forum, leading to a more learner-centric approach in the current year. It's evident that proactive guidance from DFMs has played a significant role in directing learners to appropriate threads and fostering deeper engagement.

The observed increase in learner engagement and critical thinking skills in the current year is truly commendable. It's encouraging to see DFMs actively encouraging discussions and pushing learners to think critically, creating a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.

While there may have been a decline in interaction over time in LxI threads, it's essential to recognize the ongoing efforts needed to sustain engagement and foster continuous discussions. I'm confident that with continued dedication and collaboration, we can further enhance the learning experience for all participants.

I also appreciate the insights shared by Manoj Srivastava and Anthony Gomes regarding the improvements in forum organization and learner engagement. It's heartening to see their recognition of the efforts made by moderators and their commitment to creating a supportive and collaborative learning community.

Looking forward to continued growth and success in our discussions and learning journey together.

Dear all,
These are my observations based on the focus question
1. The structural organization of discussion forum was bit weak in last year but currently it was structured.
2. I observed that the Discussion forum members immediately respond for the past couple of years and that ensures learners engagement
3. I observe that only few peers were actively involved within the LXI threads last year but currently a detailed discussion was provided by many peers

Thanks

Dear Learner,

Thank you for sharing your insightful observations on the forum dynamics! It's fantastic to note the positive changes in the structural organization, fostering a more engaging and participative environment. The immediate responses over the past couple of years indeed indicate a heightened level of learner engagement, which is a crucial aspect of a thriving community.

Moreover, your observation about the increased involvement of peers in providing detailed discussions within LXI threads is promising. It signifies a collaborative effort towards enriching the learning experience for everyone involved.

Your keen observations provide a valuable perspective on the evolution of our discussion forum. Let's continue this positive trend and further enhance the collaborative learning environment!

1. Structural Organization of the Forum
There seems to be more traffic and less scatter this year (as compared to last year). A structural reason for the same seems to be that this year the LxI are posted in response to a separate thread NOC GE 12 while last year it was posted on the discussion forum directly. As a result, last year all posts were at the same location. This year we observe greater modularity. Each post is classified in accordance with the nature of the posting, with the help of labels such as "learner-centricity", "content queries", "assignment" etc. This has resulted in a relatively better flow of response traffic to the LxIs. Thus, while the responses for Week 3 LxI for both years is comparable (60+), week 4 had a sudden drop last year while the drop has not been so steep this year.

2. Observed Learner Engagement in the forum
A better structural organization led to a streamlining of the discussion threads and this resulted in a better learner engagement in the forum this year (as compared to last year). A large number of posts last year were related to technical difficulties. This year a larger amount of the postings are related to the course content.

3. Learners' focus to the discussion within LxI threads: Points (1) and (2) above have led to greater learner focus on the discussion within LxI threads which can be seen in the learner-learner interactions this year.

R. Priyadharshini noticed better structure to the discussions this year while Mr. Gomes discussed the role of DFMs and presented a week-wise statistics of the decline in the number of responses to the LxIs last year. All responses emphasize better scores on all three parameters this year.

best,

Q1Which of the following problems does LxI attempt to address? [Tick all that apply]
Learners not getting formative feedback on their learning
 Learners feeling isolated
 Scattered discussion in a MOOC
Lack of peer learning opportunities in a MOOC

Q2What is the correct order of structure for an LxI, from a learner’s perspective?
Participate in Discussion, Attempt Reflection Quiz, Answer the focus question
Answer the focus question, Participate in Discussion, Attempt Reflection Quiz
Participate in Discussion, Answer the focus question, Attempt Reflection Quiz
Answer the focus question, Attempt Reflection Quiz, Participate in Discussion
Based on my understanding The answer for the above would be option 2( Answer the focus question, Participate in Discussion, Attempt Reflection Quiz) but the correct answer shown in option4.  After participation in DF only RQ can be attempted.
Kindly correct if I am wrong

 Good Afternoon All,

Following are my observations based on the focus question

1. Structural Organization of the Forum

The structural organization of discussion forum was more instructor-centric last year and more learner-centric this year.

2. Observed Learner Engagement in the Forum

I observed that last year learner engagement was present but little bit and this year learner engagement was deeper.

3. Learners' Focus on LxI Threads

I observe that last year learner-learner interaction was minimal and that is related to assignment work but this year learner-learner interaction is related to present individuals viewpoints about focused question,  discussion on queries about Q/A in the weekly questions, etc.

 Thank You,

Hello,
My observations about the comparison of the discussion forum of last year and the one of this year are as follows:
(1) Structural Organization
Last year's discussion forum is much less organized than this year's. The threads in the last year's DF are not always tagged and categorized as per the topic. In fact it took me some time to locate the week-4 LxI thread. This year's DF is much organised. All LxI-s are tagged as LxI-s so that it becomes easier to locate a specific thread. There were some generic responses from the DFM in last year's threads, so far I find this year's responses are more personalized.

(2) Learner Engagement
There is some drop in the learner-engagement in the LxI-s from week 1 to week 3 and a considerable drop in week-4. I see a similar trend in this year's learner-engagement as well: week-1 participation is indicated by 95 (I suppose that includes DFM's replies too), in week 5 it was dropped to 23. However, the drop has not been so sudden as it was last year.

(3) Learner's focus
Perhaps, the instructions about how to participate in the focus question discussions are clearer this year and may be this is a reason that this year's LxI threads are mostly all about the the focus questions asked. The learners have also reacted to their peers' view points. Last year's threads on LxIs are cluttered with learners bringing in their queries pertaining to the concerned week, so the discussion in the thread is sometimes not about the focus question.

Like me, Mr Anthony Gomes has also pointed out the clutter in the last year's DF. Mr Avinash has offered possible reasons for this year's better organization.

It was interesting to understand the differences you noticed in the Structural Organization of Discussion forum compared to last year's.
As you rightly pointed out, this year's discussion forum has been more engaging, wherein learners have reacted to their peers' viewpoints which is one of the objectives of such a platform. The main purpose of such a discussion forum is peer collaboration and learner engagement.

Dear All,

Following are my observations after comparing this year's Discussion forum with the previous year's one.

1. Structural Organization of the Forum: Compared to last year, this year DF is well organized. DFMs are constantly providing constructive and customized feedback on the threads posted by the learners (In last year DF, at few places it was difficult to relate feedback provided by the DFMs for the learners discussion posts).
Almost all of the discussion threads are centered around the focus question avoiding scatter..
Also LxI focus questions were designed in such way that it has improved peer interaction this time.

2. Observed Learner Engagement in the forum: Structured forum organization, well designed LxI focus questions, Encouragement from DFMs resulted in better learner-learner interaction and deeper learner engagement this time. More number of learners are not only observing the forum posts but also actively participating in discussion threads through better management of forum compared to previous year.

3. Learners' focus to the discussion within LxI threads: Last year learners' participation was limited to answering focus question whereas this year learners apart from answering the focus question, have also thoughtfully reflected upon peers' post.

I completely agree with the observations of Anthony Gomes and Dr. Shanti N. Dessai.

Dear all
I am of the opinion that everyone is just posting that this year's LXI is better organized than the previous year. It looks more like participating in the discussion to complete the assignment which I am also currently doing.
I had similar doubts as that of Siddhu who raised the need for MCQs for reflection spots even though they need not be for grading. I submitted my feedback in the first week itself.
Surely, the DFMs seem to be more engaging in this year's LXI.
Thank you

Thank you for your comment!

Many of your colleagues have contributed in a very comprehensive manner wrt the differences they have noticed in the DFs of last year’s and this year’s offerings of the current LCM. It would be great to read your views on their comments (if there are similarities and differences in views), and your own experience on the 3 parameters mentioned in the Focus Question.

Further, we will be having a LIVE Google Meet session tomorrow at 6pm, with the DFMs of the course. The link to join is here: https://meet.google.com/sts-adsd-gpu

We look forward to interacting with you and your colleagues!

Dear All,
I have gone through noc23-ge02 discussion forum and some observations made by peers on the focus question of the current course. I agree with elaborate observations made by Sri Manoj Srivastava and Dr Shanti N Desai along with others like Akshay Padikar, Renukaji, Sunitaji and Avinash pandeyji. But I would like to add certain points here. More emphasis to be given on learner-learner interaction, if possible, by one-to-one interaction through whats-app, where peers or DFMs find some learner too little responsive or not reaching to expected level. Secondly, although in present course importance has been given to regional languages in creating LeDs, the matter is yet to be properly addressed. Lack of resources (for LxT)may make it difficult to go ahead with a topic. But, it will be more interesting for the learners from different  language groups like me from north-east, if the peers or DFMs try to interact with. Thirdly, problem of correctness of accepted answers for different questions still persists. Thank you. Regards. -- Jyotirmoy Sengupta

Dear All,

I missed out the catchup Recap week 5 considering its going to be just summary of all past weeks and that made me miss out -lose on my streak- so to say. Maybe the creators can think of keeping different nomenclature for same.

With respect to my comparitive observation- I in particular agree with suggestions listed by Mr Manoj Srivastava and Mr. Jyotirmoy Sengupta (fellow learners here)

The DFM are active in responding to the shares here but I did find content a bit skewed more for STEM field.
1. Structural Organization of the Forum- This mail thing DF works only when using a laptop/PC  and not app mobile convenient. I have to switch from my cell app to laptop just to participate conveniently. I do appreciate the DFM attending and remembering our names during weekly online practice sessions- develops a sense of belonging here, esp as a 8 week course its a must to focus on community harbour.
2. Observed Learner Engagement in the forum- It's quite good. Niche but learners are genuine to learn than just here for the certificate - for those who are regulars. But yes- there's not a good strong peer to peer interaction witnessed which kind of is keeping the practical aspect of this course incomplete.
3. Learners' focus to the discussion within LxI threads- I need a clarity here. Are we getting some scores- if yes then how much? to come here are participate. Theres not much clarity here as acc I shall be incentivised to read my peers and share type my thoughts

Greetings, Divya,
Thank you for sharing your observations and insights regarding the course.

DF works from mobile too. You need to download the Google Docs app to have access from mobile via mail.  I appreciate your positive note about the DFM’s efforts.

Regarding scores, as of now, there isn’t a specific scoring system for participating in discussions within LxI threads.
However, your engagement and thoughtful contributions are valuable, even without explicit scores. Keep sharing your insights—it enriches the learning experience for everyone.

Regards,
Dr. Radhika. I,
DFM-2024.

Dear All,

I am responding quite late. But it was insightful but still challenging exercise for me as a learner to go through the DF of 2023 and then review the feedback/observations on DF of 2024 from my batchmates and my observations as below:-

1. Structural Organization of the Forum-  I agree with all the observations shared by other batchmates on the DF.  I feel the LCM course and it's co-ordination is improving year by year or batch by batch. Considering the large number of participants/learners enrolled in the course at a country level it is expected to have co-ordination challenges. But still the team of DFMs is doing their job well without loosing eye for details and positive approach.

Every year there seems to be improvement in the LCM course. In 2023 batch's DF,  one of the participant Ms. Jeanatte Camilla Barbosa Noronha has mentioned & welcomed the decision engagement of course alumni as DFM in DF  and as well as inclusion of guide on navigating through the DF which permits genuine interactions with peers in Wk-4’s DF. Even Google form’s addition prior to live interaction is welcomed by her.

It is good decision to engage previous years  course participants as this years’ DFM as previous year’s students has always has better  idea about the challenges  of the course so that now, as a DFM, they can help students in resolving the challenges. Last year Dr.S.M. Jigajinni was course student and now this year he is now part of DFM.

3.     2. Observed Learner Engagement in the forum  While comparing the learners' engagement of both the years (2023 & 2024 batches), I observed that, as compared to this year learners were equally active but their number was small. Only few were active. But the concerns and issues raised by the participants are almost similar to this years' concerns & issues. But it is true that last year also DFMs answered the students' queries and concern positively and immediately.

For example, from the post mentioned by Dr. SM Jigajinni as a course participant, regarding Q1 of RQ for week -2 has raised the concern about how many posts/questions have you posted in the discussion forum (Learner Experience Interaction 2 (LxI - Week 2) in response to the Focus Question of LxI-2? Since LXi was explained in week 4, but the week 2 content is on LxT. It seems that there may be some issues due to less active participation and responses of DFMs. But these issues are still exists in this year’s course DFM as well. It may be due to the large number of participants in the course.

3. Learners' focus to the discussion within LxI threads-  The learners are active on the DF. But like last year, this year as well  very few able to go in depth in all post and then to respond, share the feedback on DF. I think it may be due to lack of time to go through the all post and spend time to think on it.  I personally find it tough to go through all post even though I am very keen to go through every response.  But responses of participants are genuine. from the post from both the batches  we can make out that certain participants really focused and attempt to answer the questions, raise the errors in MCQ options.
