Hi,

I have a question about what is happening in this video at 00:00:02 -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zADcVz9md6E#t=2s.

It is quite evident that the absolute numbers related to completion rates of MOOCs are high when compared to onsite courses. But is this comparison relevant? Individual onsite courses were not meant to be massive but MOOCs are. So, the completion rates too should be "massive". Wouldn't it be better to compare the completion rates of various MOOCs and then analyze reasons why some have higher completion rates than others? Also relevant would be to examine if completion rates can be correlated to the socio-cultural profile of learners..

Thanks!

Dear Avinash

Yes, it is  true that comparing completion rates of various MOOCs and analyzing reasons for differences can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of online courses. Two possible reasons can be
1. Understanding Success Factors- It can allow the identification of success factors that contribute to higher completion rates in certain MOOCs, which can be further used to improve the design and delivery of  online courses.
2. Benchmarking-It will help for institutions and educators to set realistic goals and improve their offerings.

your second question is also considerable wherein we can actually analyse variations and correlate with Socio-cultural profiles of learners of various MOOCs to draft their completion rates.

Please continue this journey of mindful reflections so that our peers can enhance their learning.

Dear Sir,

Generally, participants tend to exhibit high levels of engagement once they enrolled, but over time, factors like time constraints and meeting assignment deadlines can lead to a declined interest as the course progresses. Does the completion rate show a noticeable increase when participants choose to pay for a certificate compared to those who only enroll? I request the participants to share their experience as a MOOC learners.

Happy Learning!

Absolutely, Avinash! Comparing MOOCs to traditional onsite courses might be like comparing apples to oranges. Each has its unique context, goals, and audience. It makes more sense to analyze completion rates within the MOOC space itself and identify factors influencing those rates. Great point!

However, what I'd like to add in terms of the relevancy of the comparison to onsite courses is that it can be crucial to recognize the inherent differences between these two educational models. We've talked about the scale, the "massive" part, and the intention. I'm sure we're also aware of the flexibility and accessibility, purpose and recognition of both models. It is quite debatable because some onsite courses typically have smaller, localized cohorts with a more structured environment, contributing to potentially higher completion rates, to my knowledge. While comparing completion rates can provide insights into the effectiveness of these two educational models, it's essential to delve deeper into the specific goals, target audiences, and learning experiences offered by MOOCs and onsite courses. Each has its strengths and limitations, and one can't be signed off, rather a nuanced understanding of both may help in an actual practical perception of MOOCs to make the comparison between ONLY MOOCs feasible for completion rates.

Dear Avinashji

Please watch the above two videos relating to “Blender”ers of Rajkot, with MOOC Course Instructor Prof. Sameer S. Sahasrabudhe on “Basic 3D Animation using Blender”.

The number of students enrolled for this course is not only big in number, but the passing percentage is also very high which is better than the global MOOC average.

We request you to share your thoughts relating to above two videos

       1. How the impact of English Language as a potential barrier compared to local language is overcome in this course?

4     2. How the localisation and contextualisation is achieved in this course without diminishing the content that is being delivered?

Happy learning!!
