Hi,

I have a question about what is happening in this video at 00:06:13 -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ4p_Nt4uNA#t=373s.

In the video, there is a discussion about MOOC being inspired by the need to disseminate information through expert lectures by the leaders in the field. This inspiration seems to be 'instructor-centric". How does one create a scalable open course that is "learner-centric"?.

Thanks!

Dear Avinash,

Learner Centricity is making the learners to understand the concept and the instructors ensuring it, preparing the course materials based on their needs, challenges.  Unlike the traditional one way lecture, the learner centricity model will help you to know about the interactive method of lecturing. I am sure at the end of the course you will definitely prepare a learner centric course. This course will take you on the ways of preparing the same.

Dear Avinash

In the warm up week, the instructors are discussing about the perception of the MOOC like flexibility, convinience and accessibility rather than  designing  a learner centric MOOC.

Pls. go through the videos of week 1, where the instructor highlights the significance of designing learner centric MOOC using LCM Model, Creating LeDs, Creating LbDs and LxTs and LxIs and Orchetration, which are designed by applying the learner centric model. The extensive design of the above with illustrations will be dealt in detail from second week.

Happy Learning!

Hello all,
My response to this thread and a further query comes from the context of the video
https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc24_ge12/unit?unit=16&lesson=24 where a learner's expectations from MOOC are being discussed.

First, I agree with that there is a perception about MOOCs being flexible, accessible and convenient. In some sense it focuses on a learner's convenience and accessible to a learner etc. An effective MOOC is expected to be Learner Centric.  Now, in the above-mentioned video, it was mentioned that a learner may expect material to be curated for her in a MOOC. I was confused how this connects with Learner-Centricity (apart from the fact that the expectations of a learner are being considered in designing a good MOOC). Reasons for confusion are as follows:
(1) The way diverse aspects are curated into a coherent story may be determined by an instructor, as per his/her perspective and expertise. So, at the outset, this idea of curating for a learner seems instructor-centric.
(2) Traditional teaching methods (especially textbooks) often do exactly that- they curate material into a coherent story in a textbook which gets followed by the teachers in a classroom.
So, how would a MOOC (as against traditional classroom course) be made truly learner-centric, if the curation of the course is quite structured, and is pre-structured by a set of expert instructors?
Thanks.
Renuka

Dear all

The questions posted by fellow learners Avinash and Renuka Ozarkar are worthy at this point of time. I feel that we may see only one-eighth of our course. This may be like judging a book with its cover. Let's wait and move open heartly to follow the reading and reverify the questions posted at a later time.

Greetings, Jyothi Shankar,
I highly appreciate your active engagement in interacting with your peers to encourage them in further learning.

The Learner-Centric approach encompasses teaching methods that shift the focus from teachers to students. It’s a fresh way of seeing, thinking about, and acting on educational methods.

The central idea is to develop autonomy, putting the responsibility of learning squarely on the students themselves. Also focuses on developing specific skills and competencies.

By learner centric practices educators empower students to take charge of their learning journey.

Coming to the point of curation in MOOCs. It allows learners to select, organize and present their own learning resources based on their goals, preferences and pace.

The centricity of learner could be understood as having the choice and control over the learning resources to have personalized sequence of topics. Whereas in traditional classroom fixed and linear sequence of topics are often done by instructor or the author of the text.

The LCM model is with pedagogical design guided by aligning to learner outcomes, promote learning engagement, support learning autonomy and consider learner diversity.

The ways to create a scalable open course include designing for diverse learners with different learning styles and goals, fostering interaction, empowering learners to explore their interests and apply their learning to real-world contexts and provide support along with constructive feedback to monitor the learners progress and overcome challenges.

All these were given significance in designing this course.

Persistence pays off. Happy learning.
