Learning Experience Interaction (LxI - Week 4)

As you would have already seen, the Learner Experience Interactions and Live interactions are highly appreciated features of this course. As a course team, we have taken some orchestration decisions to make it more learner-centric. These decisions are:

For Learner Experience Interactions:

  • Inviting 6 course alumni to take part as discussion forum moderators (DFMs) and 8 course alumni as overall Teaching Assistants (TAs). These people (who were the exam toppers) are selected from previous offerings of this course based of their performance and involvement in the course. For more information have a look at this course team page: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/noc22_ge02/unit?unit=125&lesson=127
  • Training the new team of DFMs for the DFM task by other TAs who have acted as DFM in previous offerings of this course.
  • Creating a weekly plan that will require a Course Team  member to spend approximately 1.5 hours in a week to answer unanswered queries from the forum.
  • Taking feedback from these moderators on the important and interesting discussions in a week, reflection on their perceptions about the current participation levels etc.

For Live interactions:

  • Floating Google Forms to collect queries from Learners before each Live interaction.
  • Including the important and interesting queries pointed out by Discussion Forum Moderators, Course TAs & Course Instructors.
  • Categorizing these queries into various dimensions to provide points for elaboration/discussion during the live interaction.
  • Having more than one person from Course Team be present (both in front and behind the screens) during live interaction.

    Other Course related decisions:

    • Providing a Catch-up Week based on the requests from the participants in Live interactive sessions and also on the Forum.
    • Adding the transcripts of all the lectures into a e-Book system called BookRoll.
    • Extending the Peer Review Assignment 1 deadline by 4 more days.
    • Sharing the Live Interactive Sessions' recorded videos from Older runs of this course.
    Focus Question:
Have these orchestration decisions, according to you, made better impact in your course engagement? Elaborate your answer to provide the positive and adverse impacts of these orchestration decisions in the current course.
(While replying you can think of offering your own course as MOOC and think about which of these orchestration decisions will you subscribe to and why?)

For submitting your response, please open the discussion forum by clicking here and reply to this Focus Question in the same thread by clicking on "Reply All" button.

The reflective orchestration of the course developers and connect to the participants, though MOOC, has still rendered a social connect. The deliberations have revived my interest in the Course, the quick response  to the learners' queries and suggestions have motivated me to consciously push myself to complete the course.
MOOCs  generally cannot reach out to so many of its participants, but this MOOC course have stimulated me to show how a good and diverse roles played by the team can fortify the quality of the Course. Through this deliberated orchestration, a symphony of team members is reflected.
This is my incidental learning as and when i plan a MOOC - a well planned and strong team can ensure that more participants complete the course with determined focus and feeling scaffolded.

For  LXI activity specific to week 4, I am sharing following points as my inputs based on the elaborate focus points for discussions that constituted the LXI 4.

    1.     The idea to incorporate course alumni as moderators is good and this should result in more engaging discussion for the learners. Further, the course alumni can share their experience when they took the course and can be helpful in resolving the logistic issues. Also, this team should divide the total learners and can create discussion pointers to each learners based on focus questions. This will enhance the learner participation in LX1.While incorporating alumni is good from orchestration view point; it has the potential to suppress the learners form being bold in expressing views.

     2.     Training new team of DFMs will be a good plan for providing backup to the existing team. Taking feedback from them will be a great idea to know things that are happening in discussion forum.  To make it more manageable a  rubrics can be prepared and that can help these moderators to identify the learners in more precise manner.

     3.     Already the Google form is deployed to collect the queries from the learners that are answered in Live Session. This is a really good that the pertinent questions are answered even in the absence of the learner during live sessions. However, I am not sure what kind of impact it will create by having more than one person both in front and behind the screens. I am satisfied by the replies given during live sessions so far.

     4.      Catch up week is a good idea both from the perspective of slow learners and those who joined late into this course. Also, the details of previous and current live interaction recordings will be an excellent source comparable to LXTs

     5.     Book roll is a fantastic idea and it allows me to take up quizzes without taking printouts.

     6.     The extension given for submitting peer review assignment has enabled many learners including me to create meaning full script which should enable them to create LeDs. Personally I am going to record my script with reflection spot and I am planning to upload it in Youtube soon after I complete this course.

    Regards

    Dr.P.Rajmohan

Insightful and clear observations, Dr Rajmohan. I resonate about the alumni sharing their learning experiences can be relatable and helpful to the present participants. I have experienced the benefits of alumni interacting and sharing their challenges, their insights and how now that they have completed the course, give a holistic and bird view perspective to the course.

The peer review assignment with extended date has motivated me too to complete what I had started.

Query- where do we submit the assignment of LbD once its completed as the page of peer review still shows the previous deadline. Please guide.

    Dear All,
    1. The concept of Focus question I found to be very helpful. I am quite accustom to take discussions after my classes, but after a while the discussion wavers from the root topic. Yesterday I just implemented the concept of Focus Question, which I thought anchor the discussion largely, as well as was finished in a given time.
    2. As mentioned by Dr. P. Rajmohan the inclusion of alumni was very innovative. I think the inclusion of alumni would be similar to peer learning experience and would enhance the depth of learning. We are thinking to involve our alumni students in the similar manner, which probably will help students to open up with their doubts and would get hands on experience from the former students.
    3. Overall the orchestration decisions have made the course very engaging, especially maintaining the "CONNECT"  to the last part (which was more of a printed media), however these extra resources could be very useful to differentiate as well as help the fast learners.
    4. The modification of course schedule provided me an real time learning opportunity, which we could implement in our courses, especially for the slow learners, so as to keep them motivated & engaged.
    5. Another part which I liked was briefing about resources like, Discourse, Discord & Padlet. The use of padlet designed by MOOC's Team for last course was similar to hands on experience and I immediately adopted it for my department and found a good buzz regarding it in my students.
    6. Lastly, the concept of CoP, I think could be very useful in my institute and I am looking forward to implement it.
On the few drawbacks I came across are
    1. Very resource intensive - will need large team & equipment, that could be a deterrent in some institutes.
    2. Time consuming for faculties - to give a particular example, I have noticed that students often don't read large texts (for example 34 page resource provided for CoI), for which we will have to provide concise material to keep the motivation on, but this would be very resource intensive.
Overall, I found this MOOC to be very very interesting and felt engaged for the entire course, such engagement I think becomes difficult as we age, KUDOS to team LCM - MOOC, looking forward for similar experience.

    Hi,
Although time contsraints are making me slow and often poorly engaged in the MOOC the orchestration decisions made this time by your team are quite useful.
    1. The live interaction with the google form for asking questions is a nice idea which I also would like to use in my online classroom.
    2. Including the previous course toppers as DFM and TAs is great and I guess rewarding for them as well as providing hands-on MOOC creation experience.
    3. The catch-up week was really needed for me due, as I mentioned earlier, to lack of adequate time to devote to the course.
Other than these, I somehow feel I did not engage as much as I should have. I am definitely going to add live faculty-learner interaction sessions to promote student engagement in the online classroom I take.
    Thank you

    Dear all,

The orchestration decisions in this MOOC have certainly helped in experiencing meaningful engagement. Sharing the following reflections on the positive and other impacts as per focus question.

Positive impacts of the orchestration decision
    1.  "Continuity of engagement beyond the course" - The presence of the course alumni and previous learners in the capacity as DFMs and TAs is an excellent way of building a cadre of Learner Centric Model (LCM-MOOC) influencers and facilitators. It helps bring previous experiences and innovation in the current MOOC. I see this as an incentivization of learners and continuation of their learning journey even after the course. The 'engagement' in that sense is continual, empowering and has a long term vision and impact.

    2. "Building hands-on experience of the engagement process''- A new team of DFMs being trained by other TAs who have acted as DFM in previous offering of the course is in a way a Training of Trainers (ToT) strategy and capacity building. This strengthens backend support systems for effective learner engagement. There is a collective ownership of the LCM-MOOC course and generation of inputs/ ideation for learner engagement within the MOOC course team. This also helps to adapt and calibrate/ fine-tune the course as per learner requirements.

    3. "Experiencing engagement as a conversation" - The promptness with which the queries/ posts in the discussion forum have been responded to by the DFMs and TAs is highly commendable. It makes learners feel as if they are in a conversation, develops a sense of belonging for the course and are motivated to retain their learning interests. This looks to me as the hallmark of this MOOC. It makes us feel confident that there is a committed and hardworking team in the background attending to and interested in the learners' learning outcomes. Compared to the AI based "auto-bot" chat replies we get in several websites; this MOOC retains its human touch, is conversational and that is fantastic !

    4. "Live interactions' ' -  The feature to have google forms collate queries of learners and addressing them in the live interactions / You Tube streaming makes the engagement more personalized and alive. It's wonderful to see and hear the faculty and team behind the  LCM-MOOC as well as queries from the participants. The live discussions is an engagement where I feel we also rely on the 'non-verbal communication' and brings out the commitment, sincerity that the team has. Learners can carry back this experience and the engagement impact is different than in the discussion forums.

    5. "Accommodative nature of engagement" - the steps taken for 'Catch up week'; extending assignment deadline; demonstrating Book Rool features and exposure to this latest research tool; availability of past live interactive sessions - all compliment and cater to the varied needs of the learner. This sensitive handling and approach of the LCM-MOOC has made it accommodative to the different learning curves of the learners. This is much appreciated and I think must have also reduced the risk of attrition or drop outs from the course.

Other Impacts - While there are no adverse impacts, there might be scope in some areas where engagement / orchestration may be handled differently. e.g.
    i. Use of analytics to communicate the quality/quantity of learner engagement. The course page shows that 1618 learners have enrolled for the course. However, we don't know how as a team we are performing. Would it be a good idea to use/analyze the backend data and provide  insights to all learners as to as a group, is their level of engagement? If so, there might be possibilities of encouraging each other (learner to learner or facilitator to learner).

ii. It seems there are new technological processes/ features being tried out in this MOOC - like the Peer review assignment. While the objective was to give an exposure on reviewing and engagement; I feel there is room to improve the technical feature on submissions/review. A video / or working example on how to use this feature might be more effective.

iii. Other than the discussion forum, is there scope to try some of the engagement tools mentioned in the LxTs - like padlet digital tool - so learners actually try out and can experience the engaging process within the course and amongst the learners and facilitators. Alternately, other than "Google Discussion Forum" are there other formats which can be tried or have more engagement user friendly features.

    regards,
    Shriji

    Respected sir,
Having 6 course alumni as DFMs ,8 course alumni as TA , who have excellent performance in the past and also having very good profile is going to furthur activate the discussion forum.
Training of new DFMs by other TAs is also a good idea and making the team member to spend atleast 1.5 hr/week  in the discussion forum to answer unanswered questions is also a good idea as it increases the moderators and the learners can get diverse views from moderators also.
The idea of collecting queries from learners , including the important questions, categorizing them are also excellent ones as it makes convenient for shy learners who have some hesitation to ask questions in live sessions.
Other course related decisions certainly help the learners who are very busy to catch up the things, complete the assignments and also to do the peer review.
Book rolls also serve as good reference materials.
All of the decisions surely add up to the learning of the learners.

    Hello everyone
The orchestration decisions does have an impact on the participants. It helps in bringing in more interaction amongst peers and provides an insight into innovative ideas to run your own course
It brings in more experienced viewpoints on to the table which helps others to learn and understand better

    Dear All,

The peer learning experience with inclusion of alumni is very fruitful and it enhanced the depth of learning. The orchestration decisions have made the course very engaging, especially maintaining link with Learning dialogue, learning by doing, learners experience interaction and learners extension trajectories. The additional resources could be very useful to differentiate and helpful to slow learners and fast learners.

Overall, I found this MOOC to be very interesting and felt engaged for the entire course. It was a good learning experience.

    Dear coordinators,
The peer learning idea of inviting top alumni of the course is attractive and motivates new learners like us. During this week's course, I learned the importance of interactions in learning. Also,I understood how important the orchestration process is. Adding transcripts of lectures to e-book system is very useful

    Team,

While designing the  orchestration decisions we should create the  concept of a flipped MOOC based on gamification and learning analytics to enhance the learning experience by making it more engaging, personalized, interactive, and community-oriented. We will experimentally evaluate the effects of that flipped MOOC on the user's engagement, community building, and goal achievement.

To  create a live discussion we can use in  pigeon hole, Kahoot.

Big challenge: Is some of the may not able to catch with the learning to overcome that we can reflection spot, reverse mentoring technique.

    Good evening all.
This MOOC has been different from other MOOCs I had taken in the past.
The Orchestration Dynamics underlines the efforts taken by the organizers.
Understanding your audience and their learning needs in the beginning, uploading the literature and other contents in various formats, giving opportunities/platform for learners' self help, continuous analysis to prepare assimilation quiz and simultaneous changes in course instruction if needed make it more of State of the Art.
However preparation and success of the MOOC is a team work requiring rich knowledge/information and continuous monitoring.
The idea to CONNECT with learners is really nice.

    Hello all,
I found orchestration decisions fruitful in engaging me to this MOOC course.
I like the idea of catch-up week. Which helped me to cover all missed portion and attempt the quizzes.
I could not attend any live interaction session but I always tried to visit discussion forum.
Discussion forum moderators really did a great job.
I think that to offer a MOOC, team work is very important factor. Also involving alumni and TA's will be more helpful.

    Hello,
This MOOC has been a totally different experience. I have never been so much involved, engaged and eager for in any of my previous MOOCs. Many congratulations to the course team for their efforts and eagerness to teach. Here are my reflections on the  orchestration decisions taken by the course team to make it more learner-centric:
    1.  Inviting 6 course alumni to take part as discussion forum moderators (DFMs) and 8 course alumni as overall Teaching Assistants (TAs).
    2. Training the new team of DFMs for the DFM task by other TAs who have acted as DFM in previous offerings of this course.
Presence of alumni in DF enables them to share their experiences as learner, which has helped me to see the course in a new perspective and encouraged me to put in more efforts. Alumni as TA is a very good decision because as they themselves have been the learners of the same course, they could understand the mindset of learners and can deliver the content accordingly. Training new DFM team by the seniors is like passing the legacy of complete participation and perfection in T&L. This has also strengthen the team.

    3. Creating a weekly plan that will require a Course Team  member to spend approximately 1.5 hours in a week to answer unanswered queries from the forum.
I have noticed that almost all the queries have been answered, promptly and properly. This gives a feeling of being cared and understood in the learner. A very positive decision towards motivating the learner.

    4. Taking feedback from these moderators on the important and interesting discussions in a week, reflection on their perceptions about the current participation levels etc.
I think this is very important to understand the learner diversity and learner's level of understanding. I have found all the focus question very well formed, with proper instructions to attempt them, all AQs well designed and catering to the diverse learning abilities. I assume that the feedback from the moderators gives dynamism to the LbD and LxT designing.

    5. Floating Google Forms to collect queries from Learners before each Live interaction.
This has helped learners like me to post the queries before the live interaction and to be sure of a befitting reply. I could express my problems properly as I had time to think about it and was not required to post my queries in hurry during live sessions.

    6. Having more than one person from Course Team be present (both in front and behind the screens) during live interaction.
This had really made the session more alive, interacting and interesting. Comments, opinions and suggestions from all present was wonderful.

    7. Providing a Catch-up Week based on the requests from the participants in Live interactive sessions and also on the Forum.
    8. Extending the Peer Review Assignment 1 deadline by 4 more days.
This decision was a boon, especially for late entrants like me. The catch-up week provided a breathing space and gave me time to understand and imbibe the content in a better manner. It was due to the extension of the date that I could cope up with the peer review assignment submission. My thanks to the course team for this. Please do this in all the forth coming courses as well.

    8. Adding the transcripts of all the lectures into a e-Book system called BookRoll
I have yet not explored BookRoll to its fullest, but providing transcript of all the lectures is excellent decision, especially if one faces internet issues.

    9. Sharing the Live Interactive Sessions' recorded videos from Older runs of this course.
I joined the course 11 days after its commencement, as the enrolment date was extended. I had lots of doubts, queries and problems for which i did not know how to approach the team. I could not even join the DF due to email id related issues. But I was greatly benefitted by the recorded interactive sessions of the older run of the course to get clarity on many points and gave me some insight into the process of this MOOC.

I think I would include all these orchestration decisions, if possible, in my MOOC as this is a complete package and has made this current course extremely LC. A Big Kudos to the team.

One Suggestion: Please arrange 1 more live interactive session to discuss with us your reflections of our LeD planning and also the short-comings of the same. Also kindly discuss what does the score we have got in it signifies.

    Thank you

    Hello all,
Here are some of my reflections on the  orchestration decisions:
1.Catch-up week is a great idea with respect to faculty members
2.Involving alumni and course toppers as DFM is nice initiative
3.For live interactions along with floating Google forms , padlet can also be used so that everyone can see each of their questions before actual interactions.
    4.Book-roll is good idea
    5.  Their is a large scope for peer to peer interactions, as we are towards the end of the course but did not know my peers very well. I feel this is gap in MOOC courses.

    thanks

Following are some of the practices in this course which were useful for the learners:
    1) Introduction of catch-up week,so that a learner hard pressed for time can also comes the course.
    2) Focus question so that the discussion does not divert .
    3) Floating google forms to collect the learner queries beforehand was also useful.

As per the post by Rajput sir, he is thinking of involving but it is yet to be done. Because a question has been asked about what are the different orchestration features implemented by sir.

    Hello everyone
I think it's a good idea to have discussion form.we can share our views with others
and can have many ideas from our peers to do our assignments.

    Hello All,

Sharing herewith some reflections on the impacts of orchestration decisions: 1) While offering my course as a MOOC, I would like to subscribe to the idea of inviting Alumni to take part as DFM, 2) Collecting queries through Google forms before live interaction will be useful, through which common queries can be addressed at once and new ideas or queries can be discussed in-depth, 3) Catch-up week is a good idea to include in MOOC and match the pace of learning for diverse learners, 4) Lecture transcripts in the form of Book Roll is one of the impactful features which I would like to include in my MOOC course.

Some of the orchestration decisions such as providing Book Roll, catch-up week, extension for peer review assignment submission helped me to bookmark some important concepts in the text form and complete a few pending assignments in due time.

    Thank You.
