MOOCs cover a wide range of topics, but can have limitations to theoretical foregrounding. Can MOOCs have a pertinent role to play when it comes to lab based learning requiring practical implications in each aspect?

Nice query. Would wait for other participants to respond on this. One cue to think about is : Will virtual labs in a MOOC qualify as lab based learning for you?

In a limited way, lab type environment can be created if the tools, software, euipments at the end of learners are same as of the tutor and video is made in a good manner.
Hope I may be understanding the question well.

It is the need of hour. Practical experience is one aspect where MOOC fall flat in front of Offline Teaching. Still to find a way. for it. Seven Universities in India have already got approval to set up own Online Learning Portals. The only courses left out in these were those which have practicals (e. g. Engineering)

In case of lab based learning that require practical implications, with the knowledge of most widely used tools, lab environment and techniques, instructors can use simulation techniques and create similar environment in their contentso that the learner can understand the practicals easily

to a certain extent.
the practice activity, for eg. the lab procedure may be performed as learnt and a self assessment can be made based on the rubrics given by the course instructor. Repetition to achieve 100% score will help in learning the skill.
However, problems such as limited lab resources, time and cost are to be considered.
