Dear LCM team,

I can understand the usage and significance  of a refection point in a LeD. However, How will you account for the heterogeneity of learners while designing a reelection point, especially in a MOOC setup?

Thats the challenge that teachers face with teaching whether it's with or without MOOCs. there can never be an absolute answer. it comes with experience.

Dear Learner,
A learner can disengage in 5-7 mins of monologue content transmission. It is because that most of the people's attentiveness spans 5-7 mins and there are high chances that after it s/he will be disengage with the content. A Reflection Spot is a structural point or a tool through which the instructor can again engage the student with the content through asking questions, MCQs etc.
In a Reflection Spot,You can simply asked them to reflect on proceeding content if the RS is in the middle or at the end of the LeD.
If you want to put RS in the starting of a LeD, then go by asking general question, followed by a summary which can answer diverse responses of the learners which you have to anticipate that these can be the responses learner might have given.
I hope I answered your query.
Feel free to ask.

I feel that RS aim at checking the understanding of the content delivered till that point and hence may not be affected by learner heterogeneity...

Excellent question, writing reflection spot to elicit response from heterogeneous learners appears to be a daunting task. My take on this is that follow cafeteria approach. Introduce RS which vary in difficulty level; tailor your RS to a variety of contexts, situations and cultures  in which  your learners are coming from. When there is a variety, and scope for doing different things (answering Questioning, just listing a response from the learner, giving even opposite word (or situation), extrapolating and even challenging the instructor, the learner gets a joy of learning.

Hi,
This is a very good question. How can you cater to heterogeneity of learners through Reflection spots?
The replies are equally good. The moderator has correctly said that when you design Reflection spots, you can deal with the heterogeneity of learners by anticipating the possible incorrect answers. So heterogeneity is defined on basis of students' level of understanding.
@balachandra Adkoli. Again a nice answer. Vary the Reflection spot questions over the course to include various cognitive levels as well as cultural contexts (this is a bit hard though). So, heterogeneity here is related to student achievement level & cultural background.
To add my input. You can also have questions that are not just textual but include images as well like an MCQ where answer options are graph images or images of possible different states of a  system.  Here heterogeneity is related to different learning styles of learners.
Others in the forum can add to this thread of what is the basis of your heterogeneity & possible solution through RS.
