This focus question helps establish a social connect, however it should be refined by asking additional details such as "what motivated you to choose this course? OR "what do you expect to learn from this course? etc which will help the learners to get to know each other (because they don't see each other) and will help the instructors gain knowledge about the "heterogeneity" of the learners.

I also found this Focus question good because it makes learners and instructors aware about the diversity of the participants in respect of their domain and region too.

I think this focus question is relevant in the sense it offers additional information about the learners and their intent of attempting the MOOC.
