HOTs in Refflection Spot

Dear Peers
                 We have learnt that Reflection spots not only helps the learners to assimilate, but also keep track of the content in the LeDs,
From a teacher's point of view, whether it is class room environment or online mode, it is necessary to engage the enthusiastic students (ideally in a class room situation) or an advanced learners (may be in an online course).
As a teacher, I always tend to ask Higher Order Thinking (HOT) skills questions during my lecture and correct the answers of the students and also share my my feedback on the questions.
Do you think that inserting HOT questions as reflection questions would add value to reflection spot?
Otherwise, can HOT questions be reserved for the assessment of the learners?
I trust my peers would reflect their views on this point.

Dear Sir,
Considering the fact that the LcM that we will be making may have been opted by an average student or even a below average student, always putting in HOTs questions as reflection spots may discourage such students from continuing the LeD or even the entire course!
However once in a while putting higher order questions as reflection spots can surely be done to keep the interest of Advanced learners. 
The same is applicable for  final assessments as well. However, this is just my personal opinion. I would also like to know what our peers think on this issue.

The purpose of Reflection Spot is to engage the learner and involve him/her in doing micropractice of the concepts being explained so as to facilitate concept acquisition through learner interaction. HOTs can definitely be a form of reflection spots. However, as Dr. Bose, pointed out that a MOOC is open for all kinds of students so it's important that we make sure the content, activities, quizzes and assessments should cater all of them. So, while HOTs are good idea for advanced learners or at an advanced stage of the MOOC, putting them at the beginning of a course might put off some learners.

It'll be interesting what other learners have to say about it.

As the name suggests HOTs should be used in advanceed stages of  MOOCs where the knowledge level of the learners are naturally going to be higher and also using HOTs should depend on the target learners.

i feel HOT is not for all.We always have to consider avg or below avg students during the class.Yes its good for advance learner.Even same time HOT gives real scenarios to students and we need to inform them for same,

This is a very good thread. I have a couple of questions to pose to all :
1) If you give a HOTS level question & it takes them more than 2 - 5 mins. to answer, will you loose your learner? 
2) What will you do if you were the learner? Would you get deviated or come back to the LeD?
Remember, we are talking online teaching here.

As a learner, i think that a HOTs level question may take more time as compared to a regular reflection spot question but i will definitely return back to the LeD to check whether my chain of thoughts was moving in the right direction or not. Moreover i would return to know about the instructor's point of view . I think HOTs level question will peak my interest on the topic .Though it will be better to introduce such questions at the later stage of the course. Since by then the learner will be at a level to appreciate such questions. Otherwise, at the initial stages of the course, HOTs level question might scare the learner away.

While designing the reflection spot questions, we must take into account the ‘Massive’ part of a MOOC. As we have to address a diversity of learners, keeping all the HOT level questions might discourage the average or below average students from continuing with the course. In order to cater to the advanced or enthusiastic learners as well as to keep the average or below average learners engaged, a proper blend of questions from different cognitive levels must be chosen.
As far as I am concerned, if there are a few HOT level questions, I would definitely pause for 2-5 mins to ponder upon them and would like to hear the explanation that follows to know what could be the other responses to the same question. But if all the questions are of the advanced level, then I’ll definitely start loosing interest in the LeD and will skip answering a few of these questions.

 To answer your question, i think the learners will be distracted if it's takes 2-5 minutes to answer a HOTs or any question that takes that time to answer. i would too in a MOOCs. i'll have to be very motivated to go back to the LeD and attempt the question.

I think that the reflection spot is meant for reflecting our learnings and it would be better if the question is of understand or apply type. HOTS like analyze, evaluate requires their own time and it may divert the learner from the LeD video. Also, it depends upon the topic of LeD.

Nice to see such rich discussion happening in this forum. Let me attempt a summarization.  Reflection spot questions can be a blend of HOTS & LOTS. It should not be HOTS level only since it may frustrate the average learners. Insertion of HOTS questions will pique the interest of the above average learners.
I completely agree with this. I am assuming you all pooled in your teaching experience to frame your answers. Let me share my teaching experience. I have given reflection spots at Analyze & Evaluate levels, maybe just one or twice in a MOOC and it has worked fine. But what we can rule out is Reflection spot at create level.

I agree with you but at the same tie we should think of the average level of the possible audience while designing RS. Rs of HOTs can be introduced to a few LeDs among all.

Few HOT's may be posed to access the learning capability of learners, but as there is a possibility of loosing average and below average learners shall be answered by instructor within 2 minutes. Giving pause of 2-5 minutes may exasperate the students. As a learner I like to answer HOT's.
