Hello. Can you please explain the solution to problem number 5 of the WEEK 3 Assignment? It is regarding the size principle.

Hello,

According to Size principle motor units are recruited in the following order

1. Smallest to Largest with respect to size

2. Slowest to Fastest with respect to conduction velocity

3. Weakest to Strongest with respect to force produced in a healthy condition

Now the question is to find the force produced after 12 motor units are recruited.

They will be recruited in the following order:-

1. All the 5 MU capable of producing 1N each(Total force produced 5N)

2. 7 MU capable of producing 5N each (Total force for the 7 MU is 35N)

Since 12 MU are supposed to be recruited, the recruitment will stop and the total force produced will be 5 + 35 = 40 N

Note: This is a hypothetical situation to convey the concept of recruitment through size principle.
