suppose there is a dataset of students with marks of each subject(physics, chemistry, maths), our goal is to find name of student with highest in physics
will this come under descriptive or inferential statistics? and why?
and if it comes under descriptive then how finding highest marks is not an inference?

it's interferential only if the study involves any  futuristic projection - generally involves chance or probability.

Highest/lowest, mean, median, or mode, variation etc can be all part of descriptive stats too.

Hi,
You have data of marks of all the students and to find who got the maximum marks, you just need to organize your data, you are not making any predictions. That's why it is descriptive statistics.
