I have a doubt regarding this question how can we derive properties like mean and median from the sample? Isn't mean sum of all terms/no. Of terms. And median the the middle term.

So in a sample we don't know all terms since it is a subset of population, how can we derive them both from the sample we need to describe whole population first especially in inferential statistics.
