AQ2.2       Question No. 10

As we're taught, Pareto chart is basically a bar chart which preserves ordering of categorical data. Then if the categorical data is ordinal, even then the pareto chart must show ordering then why in the question does it say that option (d) is one of the correct answers where it says pareto chart must not be used for the same.

Hi,
Pareto chart is a bar chart which preserves the order of frequencies not of data data points. That is if categorical variable is ordinal then there is a natural order in data points itself and we must arrange them in that order in bar chart not in order of their frequencies. That's why Pareto chart is not used for variable with ordinal scale of measurement.

So can i remember it like this??
  • If Ordinal Data - use Bar Chart
  • If Nominal Data - use Pareto Chart
