As per Week2FAQ.pdf

Expanding or compressing the scale on a graph, that can make changes in the data
seem less significant than they actually are, is known as the manipulation of y-axis.

Now, in the given chart votes share of both parties in the US are plotted as a bar chart.  I assume that the Y-axis should be 100%.  But, it's maximum value is 65%.  Isn't it a manipulated Y-axis then (as per the above definition)?

Hi,
It is representing the share of votes out of 100%. Compressing does not simply mean to reduce the maximum point on y axis, here compressing means change of scale on y axis with respect to maximum y values due to which proper information is  lost.

Hi Ankur,

FAQ clearly states differently.

There are two graphs in the Q.2 in FAQ where you're trying to depict the same information, in two ways.  One with a smaller scale and another with a larger scale.  While the first one is okay, the second is mentioned as a manipulated Y-axis.  It's clearly stated there, no change in information has to happen to be called manipulated.

@Anand,
 But during graded assignment, you and team clarified me that if we scale up unnecessary y axis ( like 200 to represent 100 marks ) then it should be considered as manipulated Y axis.

@ Anand ,
Today I have found the three examples are described as manipulated or truncated Y axis. So , it is with your understanding only.

:)

I'm okay with that, as far there's no score associated with the answer!
