Query regaring the convention of answering the question

  Sir, in one of the practice assignment question.

I don't recall if it was for mathematics or another subject but the following happened

There were options
a, X1
b, X2
c, X3
d, X4
e. X5

Suppose the correct option is a (X1) and c (X3). It was a MSQ
I responded with option c and a

But the answer was recorded as the expected answer that I had to give was X1, X2 and not a, c

The thing is, these both represent the same thing. It was alright for the practice assignment but I wonder what is the standard convention to express the answer, especially for the qualifier exam, followed by upcoming such assignments

Please clarify regarding this

In MSQ you need to tick mark the correct option.  No need to write the answers
