The given solution mentions:

Case 1:

|c + 5| = |c − 8| =⇒ 5 = −8 which is not possible.

Case 2:

|c + 5| = |−(c − 8)| =⇒ c = 3/2
.

Even if c-8 is not possible, how can we convert c-8 to -(c-8) which is c+8.
How can we change the result (c-8) of the distance formula between 2 parallel lines to -(c-8)?

Case 2:
one of C+5 or C-8 is negative (within modulus sign)
If both the result are  positive within modulus sign  then 5=8 which is not possible. (considering first case)
so, we will get
C+5= -(C-8)
or , 2C = 3
or, C=3/2
[ we can not consider absolute value for comparison  since it always generates positive value].

Hi Zobair,
There is nothing called c-8 is not possible.
Here the only thing which is not possible is  5 = -8.

Best wishes,
Rahul

I understand c-8 will lead to 5=-8 which is not possible.

But I'm saying the result of the distance formula was |c-8|

then in case 2, How can we take -(c-8). because that leads to c+8, which is different from c-8, right?
Could someone please explain?
I think I'm going wrong somewhere in converting from the mod.

So considering one of the values is minus we multiply whole of c-8 by -1, right?

If so then can we multiply C+5 by -1?
