Question Paper Name- IITM Online Foundation Qualifier Q1QP3

Question number 89.

Why 3rd option is incorrect because by putting 0, the points are (0,0), (0,0) and (-1,1) which may be also collinear.
I have also attached the snapshot of question.IMG_20201202_195125.jpg

The word distinct is missing in the question. Lambda can be 0 under such circumstances. So 0 can also be considered as an answer. Team please advise.

Correct, otherwise we are challenging the definition of co-linearity. It is a 2 Marks questions each student should be awarded marks whosoever have chosen either Option 2 or 3.
Mathematics Support Team you are kindly requested to reply at the earliest.

Dear All,
Please find herewith enclosed the solution for the above question. The answer is -1. I got 0 as well when I made mistake in sign conversion.
Hope this helps.

I agree with what Manish Bhibu said, in that case, both 0 and -1 could be correct answers....now (0,0),(0,0) and (-1,1) are obviously collinear because there are only 2 points (0,0) and (-1,1) so they ought to be collinear. Now I am curious about the solution that the IITM support team provides.

Regards,
Kalyan Panyam

If we look at the solution provided by Mr. Kalyan  we are getting lambada= 0 as one of the solution. With reference to your third last step if we take out 2 lambada common and equate it to equate we get lambada=0 because of course 2 can't be equal to zero. The other solution is lambada= -1 which of course you have derived. Hope this helps.

right,

i.e,
lambda²+lambda=0
then,
lambda (lambda+1)=0
therefore,
lambda=0  or  lambda=-1

Thank you Mr. Kalyan for the detailed solution you have strengthened our point. Now IITM has to provide us with 2 Marks to every student who opted for either option 2 or 3. Thanks alot.

They should provide 2 Marks otherwise it would really be unfair to us. There has been similar cases in QP2 also. Please Mathematics Support Team you are requested to reply as soon as possible because tomorrow is the last working day of the week and Monday is the result.

All of you please raise a query for same question on main page at least two times so that it will easily noticed by IITM.

Guys, be patient. I am sure marks will be given for either answer in the final evaluation.
