Dear All,
As an answer to the Focus Question  (LxI - Week 2)., I would be happy to give a reply based on the content provided to us in the course.

Reflection spot in LeDs have the following advantages to the learners of MOOC
1. Learners learn the concepts through Interactions generated in static mode. The list of answers for the questions the learners prepared will get validated through the content explaining the possible answers by the instructional video immediately following the reflection spot. This helps the learner to get clarified and reclarified  and makes concept attainment rock solid.
2. Since, the contents and the refelection spot happens to be the elements in static mode of Instructional design, the learners have the advantage to replay the videos as many times as possible till the time of attaining clarity on the content. This is the actual and real advantage of LCM MOOC model in comparison to dynamic mode of content delivery (Both in Online and in direct Class Room Base Learning).
3. Think about video aggregators sites like You Tube. Practically any IT skills can be learned through ocean of videos available in it. Follow the approach of pausing the video and following  the steps (Micro Practice) and check whether the outcome you obtained is consistent with Video.
For example I wish to share the experience of One of the Courses Offered through Swayam called Digital Marketing in which I got certified as well. This Digital Marketing course comprise a lot of Practical Activity which has live Screen Capture of the complex steps ( In Clicks and Key actions). As a Learner, I paused and replayed the videos several times and verified the output of mine with the conetnt and proceeded to next step. This actiually ensures learner autonomy in learning complex subjects.
Another example is based on the website howtostats.com which has quite a lot of videos on how data analysis can be performed with SPSS. I dont know whether the site is still online but many of its instructional videos are still available on You Tube. Those who have basic knolwedege in statistics can learn any compex Stat Analysis based on the above approach.
Thank You,

Regards

The reflection spots introduced in the LeD helps a learner by:
1)  Recalling/ Assimilating  the knowledge received so far.
2)  If the reflection spot is at the begining of the LeD then the learner  recalls his previous experiences on the subject.
3)  It helps in micro practice.
4) These are the points in the LeD where  the learner might get disengaged. Reflection spots help in keeping the interest of the learner in the content.
5)  Through the reflection spots the learner can opine about the content learnt.

The role of reflection spots:
1. Maintains learner’s engagement, breaking the monotony of the content only modes.
2. Allows the learner’s to gauge their learning, thus providing instantaneous outcome based upon which the learner’s could proceed further or if lacking in understanding can go back and again learn the content.
3. Reflection spots posted before the content would help in the brainstorming of previously acquired knowledge, thus forming a bridge between previously acquired knowledge with the one to be acquired from the content.
4. Reflection spots posted after the content help in organising and structuring the acquired knowledge, so that it can be used when needed.

Hi,
I recognize the following benefits of reflection spots for me as a learner:
1. A small challenge to test my understanding of the material- it gets me excited and I feel encourgaed to keep learning of I am "correct" or motivated to keep learning if I am "incorrect". So either way, it motivates my learning desire.
2. It helps break the monotony of the video- even though MOOC videos are already quite short!
3. Some MOOCs I have taken would provide a visual representation of how I performed in comparison to other learners- this again had a motivating effect and would give me some insight into how others' are thinking about the same thing- soem differing perspectives would become obvious.

Thank you!

Hi, greetings to all !

1. Not all MOOCs are Learner-centric.
2. All MOOCs have video lectures.
3. Not all videos are Learning Dialogues(LeDs).
4. Converting videos into LeDs, makes them learner-centric.
5. Videos or docs with reflection spots are LeDs.
6. Inserting reflection spots in the videos at the appropriate point of time, keeps the learner engaged all through the video.
7. Reflection spots can be inserted  in the beginning of video, in the middle, at the end and /or at any other places where the learner attention is expected.
8. LxT2.2 on Creating interactive videos using online tolls, has really shown the beauty of how interactive a video can be made to ensure learner engagement.
9. We can make LeDs having interactive video content using H5P and Edpuzzle
10. For the first time, after watching the videos of LxT2.2, I  experienced  the joy of getting engaged with the content. Answering, and getting answers correct: that increased my joy of learning

Thank you team LCM

Dear Learners,
In a Focus question reply mail provided by Manjusha specific to the email id " manjusha...@gmail.com"  certain details on the placement of reflection spot is disussed. While it is absolutely perfect to have reflection spot at the begining, middle or at the end of the Instructional Video. The following
rule of thumb needs to be followed.
1. The reflection spot in the begining of the video should be something that the learner can answer based on his/her previous knowldge of the subject matter. This should set the base for the Instructional video to proceed further on the concept and this is how a loop will get closed.
2.If the reflection spot is kept at the end of the video, the closing of the loop should be ensured through LXI. This has certain disadvantage as all the leerners who are active in completing Instructional video will be active in LXI.
Hence, it is desirable to have Reflection spot in the middle of the video rather than at the end.

Thank You,

Regards
Dr.P.Rajmohan

Hi all,
Sharing my observations/experiences about the benefits of 'Reflection Spots' from a learner perspective:
1. Reflection spot serves like a concious contemplation exercise for a learner at the appropriate moment while watching a LeD. This focuses learners attention on the content viewed and triggers a critical thinking process to digest the concept at the same time realize where the doubts (if any) remain.
2. The chances of proper understanding, consolidating, recalling the concepts encountered before and after the 'reflection spot' is all the more higher. It kind of reinforces the intended conceptual understanding and prepares the learner to use it for the next stage/phase of content.
3. The type of questions/ activity posed in the reflection spots also create opportunity for the learner to micro practice, get feedback on their understanding and retain their interest levels.
4. Reflection spots can also create opportunities or encourage learners to take initative to post their views in the discussion forums/ group chats... making collaborative learning possible.
5. Since there are no grades/marks for answers or responses on reflection spot questions; there is a 'sense of freedom' or "non-evaluation"; hence learner is free to think / analyse the content or concept in several ways.
6. Reflection spots serve like concious pause points to 'engage' the learner and make the ambience more interactive.
7. The onus of 'undertaking a concious reflection' is on the learner; hence there is a certain sense of ownership of the LeD; a sense of personalized learning.
8. Reflection spots also help learner to control the pace of content delivery and move forward while self evaluating their understanding.

Hi All! As a continuation to Mr.Akshay Sharma's post on benefits of Reflection spots in the MOOCs, I've experienced a sense of curiosity when I pause while listening to a video lecture, as to what to expect next, in the course of the lecture. As a learner, it keeps me hooked to the course of the lecture. This sustains my interest and engages me productively.

Hello all!
Reflection spots makes the learner to think about what the instructor has asked. So it increases the imaginative and creative abilities of the learner.
Learner needs to pause the video and think all of the possible answers and then may check out what the instructor has to say !
Cognitive and affective capabilities are developed and improved .

Thank you !
Regards

Dear Learners,

Greeting from the Designing LCM Course Team!

Thank you for posting interesting observations on reflection spots. Keep them coming!

One of our learners, Dr. P. Rajmohan has made an opinion that placing a reflection spot at the end of an LeD is disadvantageous. I would like to know the opinion of other learners on placing a reflection spot at the end of an LeD. Also, in such a case, what are your thoughts on ensuring that the loop is closed?

Greetings Everyone
Firstly as a student in both online and offline formats, one of the most fundamental problems I and many of those I know, face is that we get lost mid way during the lecture and begin to drift away at times because of which we miss out on various parts of the lecture. I believe a reflection spot is a part of a LeD that very efficiently addresses this issue by giving a pause to the lecture and the discussion as a whole and making the learners recall and reflect on the learning that happened till now. These Reflection Spots also act as a common point for learners of all speeds to gather, reflect, regroup and continue their journey in understanding the concept or the concepts after that.
Secondly, regarding the thoughts of  Dr. P. Rajmohan as put forth by  Dr. Siddhi, I believe that putting a Reflection Spot at the end of the LeD (thus not having a follow-up content to it in the same LeD) would fail to achieve two important conditions of a Reflection Spot, which are Validation of their answer and immediate feedback on the responses of the learner. And without these two conditions, the Reflection Spot would become more of a self- reflective question or more of an end-of-the-class homework and thus might not have the same impact as a Reflective Spot is expected to have.
Thank you and Regards
Abhishek

Using the pauses in the lecture ( i.e. Reflection spots) the learner express their thinking and articulate their reasoning while interacting with LeDs.
After the reflection spot the instructor addresses common expected responses and summarizes the concept in the rest of the video.
Reflection spots can be in beginning to recall the earlier taught concepts, or in the middle, or can even be at the end.

The reflection spots are making the course very interactive and as mentioned by many, provides the learner with the freedom to learn at his own pace. The courses that I have completed did not have the concept of reflection spots. In this course the presence of the same and the short videos are interesting and making my understanding of the concept much better. The benefit arising out of the same is it makes the learner think and if they get the answer wrong it makes them go back and listen to the video once more. This ensures learning. Reflection spots can be at the beginning, middle or at the end as it makes learning interesting and wanting to get the responses correct. It allows the learner to start thinking and derive his/her own conclusions on the content learnt.

In my view, placing the reflection spot at the end of an LeD may not necessarily be a disadvantage and the choice/effectiveness depends on the context; logical point; how it enhances the connect with the learners; the learning outcome desired and how the instructor subsequently closes the reflection before the beginning of the next LeD.

E.g. the instructor may close the reflection spot at the end of an LeD by redirecting learners responses to a discussion forum and providing immediate feedback and validation in the forum. This could generate diverse viewpoints and learners feeling connected to the LeD.

At the same time, as noted in the LxT on 'Research on interactive videos', the research studies mention that that the learner engagement and learning success is optimal when the first questions appears in videos after about 25% of its duration. This also gives scope for the instructor to close the reflection spot within that LeD itself. Perhaps, in this sense there is an advantage of not placing reflection spot towards the end.

regards,
Shriji

I would like to share my experience on the question asked by Dr Siddhi S "I would like to know the opinion of other learners on placing a reflection spot at the end of an LeD. Also, in such a case, what are your thoughts on ensuring that the loop is closed?"

I included reflection spots during lectures to medical students. Purposeful placing of a reflection spot at end of an LeD fosters student learning. Being live lectures it was easy to close the loop. For online platform I think closure of the loop can be ensured through assignments or discussion forum.

Hello everyone,

The response of Learner Experience Interaction (LxI - Week 2):
Regular reflection aids learning, and with a few easy tactics, it may become a regular and meaningful routine for learner/students.
It motivates learner to improve and learn from their understanding, knowledge and critical thinking and that is how it explore the learning attitude.

Dear learners,

I have experienced the following benefits of Reflection Spots in the MOOCs in which I participated

1. It keeps us focused and alert while watching the video as a reflection spot can come soon.

2. Answering Reflection spot clears our doubts and makes us a better understanding of concept taught.

3. It challenges to think creatively and explore imagination.

4. After better understanding, learning is no longer mugging up!!!

5. It engages and supports healthy competition without the pressure of marks.

6. Feeling of satisfaction and happiness resultant of effective utilization of time.

Reflection spots is an excellent idea of engaging and involving the students.
Reflective journal writing has been a common feature in our curriculum, but i have tried reflection spots in an online session, where we had invited a resource person to speak to us about creative expressions and pedagogy.
We created reflective spots and  as he completed short  inputs on hand gestures, hand movements and voice modulation, a short halt was taken after each input,  to ask student-teachers how they can apply this while teaching. The reflective spots made the session relatable, applicable and relevant to student -teachers.
Reflective spots worked for me as a teacher educator at short intervals.

Answer to focus question
To my Mind, Reflection spot benefit the learner in not one but many ways
1.Reflection spots. help learner to focus attention on content viewed and analytically think about the concept.
2.It actually forces the learner to intended learning of concept and create an interest for content .
3.Reflection spots put in the beginning of video help in testing of previous knowledge of learner .Learner may recall and relate with the topic or even feel the need to brush up the topic .
4.Since reflection spots are ungraded and not counted for assessment, so learner feels free to express his perspective without fear of being judged. learner can express his thinking fearlessly.
5.Immidiate feedback after the  reflection spot is a step further in reinforcing the learning by clarifying doubts, if any.
6.Reflection spots, as the name suggests, help in reflecting about content, allow micro-practice, captivate interest of learner by breaking monotony, Thus increasing learner engagement and better content assimilation.

Hello All
Reflection spot is very important part of the LED.it can be inserted in the beginning of the LED and learners can recall the previous lecture in this way and can focus to the next lecture carefully.also reflection spot can be inserted where we feel our learners are getting bored of the lecture and we can put small question to engage them with us and next part of our video can be answer of that question.Edpuzzle is one of the best way of such type of videos.

Hello All,
I agree with my fellow learner of this course regarding benefits of having reflection spots, such as:
    1. Assimilating  the knowledge received so far.
    1. Micro practice for learners.
    2. Engaging of the students through out the video content or LeD.
    3. Immediate feedback to the learner for self evaluating the understanding the content.
    4. Makes the learner prepared to answer the Quizzes easily.
In the LeD 2.1 of this week in this course,  "What is an LeD?"
There is a reflection spot where the advantage of LeD over Content delivery video was asked, helped me answering questions in "Practice Questions (LbD) on LeD 2.1"

As a learner the Reflection Spot is to create a nudge, it can be rightly grabbed or may be not.
By placing it at the end leaves the thought cycle open for a learner may be. To Correct the path of self analysis it must be sandwiched between the Course content.

Reflection spot helps in following ways:
    1.It helps to understand content.

    Greetings to all.
The insertion of Reflection spots benefits mainly by interactive and engaged learning. It allowed me to critically evalaute myself along the course - pracitce Qs especially.  Also the the concept of LbD - micro practice broke the montonous learning.

    Dear all
In my opinion, the reflection spots embedded in Learning Dialogues benefits the learners in:
    1)  Acquisition of knowledge
    2)  Getting feedback of own learning
    3)  Recalling the knowledge received so far.
    4)  maintaining interest in the topic being delivered
    5)  Micro-practicing the concepts learned so far
I completed the course in Feb 2020 titled "Digital Transformation In Teaching Learning Process (DTITLP)" organised by NPIU, and conducted by IIT Bombay on SWAYAM. The reflection spots (maximum times in the middle of LeDs) were really helpful in maintaining interest in the content being delivered and were helpful in recalling the concepts.

    Dear all,

It's been an interesting and eye opening 2nd week wrt to LED n reflection spot insertion. The new required knowledge shall be indeed helpful in making the classes more effective and learner centric. The concept of insertion of reflection spot ll unable the students to micro practice n recall the given lecture. The take home message ll be clearly given.

    Thanks,
    Dr. Juhi Aggarwal.

Reflection spot helps learner in the following way.
    1. Assimilate the content, therefor help in better understanding of topic.
    2. It simulates the interactive class room.
    3. It provides opportunities  leaner to think at micro as well as at macro level.
    4. Leaner may think on real life examples

Insertion of the Reflection spots in the instructional video can benefit the learner in multiple ways. Here is a list of them:
    1. Reflection spots breaks the monotony of the video/narration and bring back the learner's attention on the topic of discussion
    2. Reflection spots reflects the degree of assimilation of the instructions / knowledge by the learner in the form of the answers that he gives to the question put up by the instructor or by doing the activity the learner is asked to do.
    3. These also prompts the learner to recollect what has been discussed so far and can come up with some new aspect of the topic
    4. The instructor gets a chance to review the impact of his content delivery and can make necessary changes, if required.
    5. Reflection spots motivates the leaner to be more attentive and more participatory in the process of learning.

    Hi to all.
I just wanted to thank the LCM team for extending the timelimit for Phase 1: LeD Plan submission. I have completed it. However, while submission, due to some technical glitch, I couldn't submit it yesterday within the stipulated deadline. I kindly request you to please open the LINK for my submission. I would really like to evaluate my LeD plan and get the insights on the same.

    Thankyou!!!
