Dear ma'am,

The statistics mock test had too much calculation work making it literally impossible to complete even in 1 hour, even with the calculator, even after I remembered all formulae.
I request you to make the Qualifier Exam in such a way that there aren't too many big calculations or it would be impossible for us to complete the test.

Exactly. Considering except English all other papers involve calculations. So I would request you to consider limiting the number of questions or decrease the calculations

actually, wherever I found intensive calculation couldn't be avoided, well I read and skipped those questions.
solving such questions without a spreadsheet is a nightmare

I found mock tests extremely difficult to answer within given time especially Mathematics and Statistics. I am studying after more than 20 years hence it takes time to read the question, understand / interpret it and work on the problem even though I scored very well in assignments.

Computational thinking was fine however because of limited number of  questions there are chances of loosing mark incase of any minor mistake. MSQ also adds to worry considering marks are not granted even if one of the answer is incorrect.

I am hoping that IITM team will evaluate mock test results and make corrections accordingly.

Maths had lesser calculation than Stats, thats my view.

In math the number were divisible and had good fractional number as answer ( Less use of calculator ), why stats had so many calculation? The same should have been there in graded assignment so that we could judge the pattern.

I agree that the calculations could be reduced. But an additional problem is that the official calculator that will appear in the exams (this one) doesn't allow keyboard operation. All calculations have to be made with mouse. This is even slower than operating a normal calculator, or a calculator app with keyboard.

I hope the IITM team takes this into account when setting questions, or makes arrangements so we can at least operate the calculator using the keyboard.

Even I agree to you all.

Please sir/madam do something in regards of these things.

One thing I would like to point out is that the calculator is actually of no ise for longer calculations like for the standard deviation or fpr the correlation.

If there would be another calculator which is more flexible to use or plz allow Google Sheets.

Please please reply IIT TEAM.

Without spreadsheet and the recommended calculator, this paper became a nightmare . For maths, the paper was lengthy but the calculation you can done in pen and paper . But in stats, it is not possible.

Definitely I doubt passing the qualifier if this is how the question paper is going to be.
The questions atleast 40 Mark's should be straight forward.

i totally agree....computational Thinking was difficult even though it had a few questions.....statistics was again lengthy similar to mathematics.
it is difficult to complete even 70 % of the questions.....deducting  our errors , I barely manage to score 50.
even after scoring between 90-100% in the graded assignments

can we get some more mock tests to practice further as most of us are not use to answering exams

Thank you

All mock tests are extremely difficult due to the time constraints.
In mathe and c.t we don't have enough time for thinking while in statistics it is due to enormous calculations.
In English in the grammar section we forced to scroll up and down for reading and answering passage

There is a huge gap between the result of mock tests and graded assignments.
In other words the marks we got in graded assignments have no significance to judge ourselves

The questions which were asked in the mock test were very advanced compared to the ones we have solved in Graded assignments and shown in Tutorial videos.

I don't have a problem with the other subjects, but Statistics takes especially long. Especially when the calculator doesn't allow keyboard operation. I think the other subjects may be conceptually difficult for some people, but with Statistics it's not easy to finish even when you know all the answers.

If we have to face this type of question in the final exams then it should be open book test, Hard to remember all the formula, this is not objective type of question paper rather subjective, rather than google sheets, they should provide regular sheet to solve. This question paper was more like regular 3 hr exam.

This mock question paper ( Stats ) was not for screening but to award degree in stats. And this is my personal view.

It was too difficult to do calculations in so many questions in such a short period of time. Especially, it took really a long time & effort to calculate Standard Deviation & Correlation using the recommended calculator.

Table S.1 and S.3 has to be solved with inappropriate online calculator..

application of the formulae should be the focus of the tests/course, rather than doing very long calculations forever...

Hopefully computations are appropriate enough and tested by instructors that they can solve in 35mts, and use 10mts for verification.
Else people may struggle to score 40 in one of the subjects despite they may score 50% overall..

Agreed with all the points people have rased. It's a pain to solve such lengthy calculation using mouse, it doens't support keyboards,

There are people who are studying almost after a decaded and it takes time to process the questions n answer it. I knew all the formula but even after using memory feature in the calculator, the question asked were too lengthy.

The mock test was awful today. I panicked as the test started , I felt couldn't complete in 45 mins. If this will happen with anyone in main exam then spending 2 months studying night and day will be of no use. Statistics was lengthy and too many calculations. It was kinda subjective test instead of objective. CT code was soo advanced. A person from non technical background can't understand it.  The level of questions in the all 4 assignments are different from Mock. Many people score pretty good in assignments.  After working 8-9 hours we study... After years many people are studying. Please take this into consideration. Qualifier exam is just to check whether we can perform well during the course. This is a professional course and mostly are working individuals. Make qualifier questions in a such a way that we can solve each subject within given time. it takes time to read and understand the question. there should be less calculations and objective questions.. The provided calculator is pain..

totally agreed with all your concerns.
Another issue I felt was that questions are carrying a lot of marks. And only the final answer is considered. As the marks are taken on 100, a 3 marks question in fact serves as a 12 marks question. I made mistake only in 3 questions for CT  Mock, (all based on a single Pseudocode) but ended up getting 44/100.

So my request is to increase the number of questions with and to decrease the overall difficulty level. SO THAT ALL ARE ABLE TO SCORE WELL.
The concepts are clear as we have the best lectures available for each topic, but we all lack practice in this high intellectual  level circumstances.

Thank you,

I thought IIT Madras would focus more on testing the basic logic required for this course in  this qualifying exam. But it seems it will be more about doing extensive calculations and memorizing the formulas.

Yes, type of questions asked in graded assignment and mock tests were of a completely different level. It would have been better if they had set graded assignments at par or atleast closer to same level of difficulty, students would have been better prepared for last four to five weeks.

As regards use of scientific calculator it is too difficult to use it and toggle between different screens.

MSQ questions with higher weights per questions adds to the level of difficulty in CT. Frankly there is no material or question set to prepare in last one week at this level of difficulty is my worry.

All in all, experience of mock was very different in terms of level of difficulty. Time required to solve questions even if someone knows the concept was totally insufficient. I hope IITM will factor in the feedback and experience while setting qualifier exam. It felt like we practiced for local cricket while doing graded assignments and were asked to play T20 for mock.

It seems concepts has to be understood thoroughly and will not help the more no of assignments, mock, graded/non graded etc.,
iitm team given just the kind of syllabus in the video, we need to search the materials of the given syllabus and understand going through  with  practice.

i totally agree aside this all ,most are like new to this type of course and i had never learn this type of ct and stat sub with this difficulty and i kindly request that they understand our issues and try to solve them

Without spreadsheet and the recommended calculator, this paper became a nightmare . For maths, the paper was lengthy but the calculation you can done in pen and paper . But in stats, it is not possible.

Guys,

You can always simplify the formulae to reduce the computations, and thereby improve your problem-solving efficiency!

For e.g.:

population variance = (sum(x-u)^2)/N
                                    = (sum(x^2-2xu+u^2)/N
                                    = sum(x^2/N) - 2u^2 + u^2
                                    = N^(-1).sum(x^2) - u^2

Same can be done for most of the standard formulae. In stats, these are called "computing formulae". You can look them up in any standard text, or derive them yourself. You may also want to do that for maths. Sometimes, it isn't even necessary to compute the whole formula to arrive at the solution(s) !

Note: Like in space & time, there is always a trade-off between speed & accuracy - total energy has to be conserved! :)

Best,
Kaushik

Typo with brackets in line2 & line3 of pop.variance. But, hope you've got the idea.

Hi,

Has anyone found any useful material especially questions on the lines asked in mock test?

Hi,

I have found the content provided by IITM to be more than sufficient to solve the problems in the mock tests. The only challenge, as most have pointed out, was time-management. There may be multiple ways to solve a problem, but always fewer efficient strategies to do it. And, given that we are applying for a BSc program in data science, it is reasonable to expect the qualifier to challenge our cognitive acumen to solve problems efficiently.  So, in stead of directing the course instructors on how to test us, perhaps it would be wiser to figure out ethical ways to take up the challenge head-on. I have found that if your concepts are crystal-clear, even with minimal rote-learning, you can find the optimal path to the solutions.

Happy Green Diwali to all!

Happy problem-solving!

Agreed. Atleast offline MS excel should be allowed to use.
