Bro have you ever appeared in the GATE exam?? it from IIT as well and there is no sectional cutoff....moreover, one who does not score 40% in a subject should be devoid of taking that subject in the first sem hence making it fair...if the overall score is below 50% then the student is not eligible for the course at all. There are sem exams which will test student's capabilities throughout the course and believe me only worthy will get a Diploma/BSc from IITM.
It may be easy for fresher/undergraduate since they are still studying or have recently completed studying. For working professionals, believe me after my graduation for the first time in 7 years I studied for this exam and already a lot of concepts which are not part of our day to day job have already been washed off. We don't have the privilege to sit and study because of the nature of work and we got a family now....so it's a completely different story.
I know we all are fond of IIT because of its reputation of being the best in the country and it is what it is, IIT never compromises its standards. Since this program invited people from all walks of life to participate, it should give them some helping hand to motivate them to learn and do some improvement in life. I am not saying IIT should reconsider min percentage criteria and other sorts of things, but some modifications like including graded assignment scores in the final result (up to some extent because that's how it will be in the first sem as well) or like someone said: considering total %. In that way, we get what we have earned, nothing more.
Apologies if I was rude anywhere. Hope things go great.
Regards,
Kalyan

I don't think so. 40% in each subject is already a ridiculously low bar, going below which will degrade the value of the course. This is an IIT course, it's not supposed to be easy.
