OK, I gotta get my two cents in about this celebrated Red-footed Booby. This bird has been hanging out in Port Townsend for about a month now, and is probably the most photographed R-F Booby in existence. It roosts mainly at the Marine Science Center at Fort Worden State Park, either on the building at the end of the pier or on a piling just off the pier. It also perches on the rigging of the Hawaiian Chieftan, a majestic tall ship docked at Point Hudson. I visited my sister last week in Portland, and had to make a side trip along the way to see this bird. How or why it got here is anybody’s guess, but it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon. So if you want to enjoy a tropical bird without going to the tropics, take a trip to Port Townsend. And bring your cameras! This bird will practically look at the camera and smile.
