Rare bird?

Apparently, this Rose-breasted Grosbeak hasn't been seen, or at least recorded, in Whatcom County? The others are Black-headed Grosbeaks. It was at my feeder in Blaine for only one day about a week ago.

I had one at my feeder many years ago but it was not recorded. The females of each species are harder to distinguish from each other so maybe we have more than we think. Tricia

as you may or may not know, these species will hybridize maybe rare at the feeders of local bird watchers, but just how rare given the broad habitats these grosbeaks use in summer in W Washington? surely rare in comparison to black-headed which are abundant

interesting to close your eyes and listen to recordings of these two RBGB seems clearer and sweeter than the scratchier BHGB

Lyle,

Yours is the only one I can find listed in eBird for Whatcom County. Others have been reported in surrounding counties and Canada. And the Washington Ornithological Society keeps its own records, which I don’t know how to access. Thanks for letting us know they’re out there.
