I got these late Friday and thought I would share.

I tracked the heron for about 45 minutes, crawling around in the wet grass and sitting in wet soil. Gore-Tex is good stuff. Completely worth the effort.

Awesome that you got a photo of the heron with a mammal (anyone know what mammal it was?)!  When we moved to Bham 30 years ago I was surprised to see herons hunting in fields.  Not going to say it never happens in the NE, but I don’t remember seeing it.  So, very cool to see this heron with mammal prey!

Best,

John

What a great series of photos.  I think you should send in the one with the (vole?) to The Hamster Wheel. I think the more the public understands what other animals can be impacted by rodenticides, the better. And everyone knows and loves herons even if they are not birders at all.  Thank you for sharing these!  Nancy

I was thinking the same thing, Nancy. Rodenticides kill a lot more animals than just rats and mice. Plus Herons are a cheap, environmentally friendly form of pest control! And thanks for sharing your wonderful photos, Andrew.
