I thought I'd share an image of something I witnessed in our small orchard in the fall of 2024, which I didn't understand at first. I confessed my first thought was, "wait, do hawks eat fruit?", but then I read that they handle inanimate objects in order to learn how to hunt. I assume there was a nest nearby since this orchard was near the forest edge. Audubon has now published it in their online gallery of interesting bird behavior, link attached.
