It is great to have a community of so many birders who explore all over the county. I was just made aware of a retention pond by Amy Brightman, I'd not looked at before. It's on Mohoganey Ave just N of Costco. It's an eBird hotspot I'd not heard of.

Anyway, I had no idea Pied-billed Grebes bred this side of the state, or at least in this county. There are 3 greebettes in this pond, faces only a mother could love.

My eBird report with photos is here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S259317387

As birding slows during these summer months, it's great to find some interesting places to bird.

For those who do not use eBird at all or much, some new features allow one to describe the general area, post photos of the area, and even post about other animals. I like this feature. You can see what I did with that on the link above.

Cheers

Yes, thanks Eric! We saw your post and went over there this morning to take a look. Spotted the momma and grebelettes. Only saw 2 little ones. Always worry about that.

Hi Eric and Whatcom Birders,

Thank you Eric for letting us know about the Pied-billed Grebe breeding site here in Whatcom County.  This is a very special find.

I had a special moment watching a mother Grebe feeding her two young ones crawdads while birding in Gilbert AZ. this spring.  Granted, this is not a Whatcom location but I just wanted to add one of my photos to the ones you shared with us.   Thank you again for all the information you share with us at this site.

Allen
