Hi Whatcom Birders,
I ran into a lifer for me yesterday afternoon at Lake Padden of all places. Probably reflects a lack of attention on my part over the years more than rarity, but I'd be happy to be wrong.
The 20 Ring-necked Ducks were clear as a bell though. The cool little white ring behind the black bill tip, the side patch going from dull gray to bright white in front, the steep forehead, clearing diving ducks, good bit smaller than Mallards.
Are those regular in the winter in our parts? I see 93 were counted by Terry Wahl and company in 1976 so I bet so. (Super fun looking at his list and write up, thank you James). I was fortunate to take a class with Terry in about 1991 or 2 soon after moving to Bellingham. His birding by ear in Whatcom Falls Park blew me away.
Appreciating the continuing adventure of birding and the good company along the way,
Tim
