I've seen Euro/ American Widgeon and a few Mallard /Pintail crosses over the years but this latest sighting is a goofy one for sure. Having lunch at the Great Blue Heron restaurant at Semiahmoo G&CC last week and spotted what appeared to be Hen Mallard with a very long neck with a whitish throat swimming in the pond behind the restaurant . She was watching over 2 chicks that also had long necks and very Canvasback bills. The youngsters (probably about a month old) were diving repeatedly to the bottom of the pond, not a Mallard habit, and it appeared the legs may have been further back, as in diving ducks.

I'm not questioning what you saw, but I will say that I have seen baby mallards diving for food alongside their dabbling mother in Derby Pond. They weren't big enough to feed by dabbling.
