Although I am not an expert, I am guessing they might not be migrating quite yet….but soon.  My guess is based on a bit of reading, plus observing a Common Nighthawk “nest” every couple of weeks near where I live.  The eggs were laid around July 4th and from my reading it is 4-6 weeks before the young ones are ready to fly.  Even then the adults will feed them another 1-2 weeks.  So, at least those nighthawks won’t be migrating until the 15th or so of August at the earliest - when their young ones are ready to be on their own.  Maybe some of the nighthawks that were observed on August 8th were adults and fledglings “in training”….or maybe some nighthawks are “gathering” to migrate….as I have read they will migrate in groups.   Always something we don’t know for sure about birds!
