I know a number of groups have researched names on war memorials. You may like to know that Lancaster Uni has rolled out its Mapping Loss website (a joint project between the History and the Computer Science depts) nationwide. You have to enter 'city name' when you upload (!) and so far there are only 2 'cities' in the whole of East Anglia - Mulbarton (popn c.5000) and Flordon (popn c.200)!! But I am sure other groups can soon add!
Warning though - you need to use their template and not make up your own according to the order in which they list what they want - I got very confused and had to e-mail them. I do have a template if anyone wants it.
Also the whole thing is based on Googlemaps, which can't cope with addresses that no longer exist! That was most addresses on soldiers' war records! E.g. 'by Tradesman's Arms, Mulbarton' - which is a pub knocked down in 1972!! If it is a village, probably best to give village name, Norfolk (in case there is somewhere else in the world with that name - there is a Mulbarton near Johannesburg, for example....).
Check out http://hi-som.lancs.ac.uk/ and see what you think....

Dear Jill,

thanks very much for this very useful website. It would be lovely to get a comprehensive list of Norfolk's war casualties - what a useful resource that would be!

Brilliant. I took a photo of my local Commonwealth War Graves site when out the other day. Hadn't realised that's what it was. Must see what to do next.

In November 2018, as part of the centenary commemorations for the end of WW1, Brundall Local History Group was one of many heritage groups around the country which contributed towards the War Memorials Online project. This was a partnership between The War Memorials Trust, the Imperial War Museum, English Heritage and the Civic Trust. The main aim of the project was to record information about the current condition of war memorials, but it was also a data gathering mission so that the Imperial War Museum can eventually create a comprehensive national database to facilitate searching names and places. We uploaded photographs and transcriptions of the names and inscriptions on our local war memorials to  War Memorials Online - Help us to record, conserve and remember our war memorials
Both the WMTrust and the IWM welcome further voluntary input on their websites so it's worth taking a look. See also War Memorials Register | Imperial War Museums (iwm.org.uk)
The Trust has produced some excellent learning resources too http://www.learnaboutwarmemorials.org/

Hi,
Thank you for the info on the Lancaster Uni website - I will be interested to take a look.
Our group undertook a WW1 project with detailed research on all men from our three villages who served in WW1, not just the casualties.  All our research can be found at our website:  http://greatwar.nibchg.org.uk/
At the time we were undertaking this project I think I remember the EDP were trying to put together a comprehensive list of all casualties from Norfolk, village by village - though I don't remember seeing the end result.  I think they had put one together some years ago but had realised that it was not complete.
