Dear cyclists,
I am a 17 year old high school student living in Amherst. I love biking and want to meet new people to ride with, but the group rides that start in Northampton are a little inaccessible after school or work. A ride starting from Amherst sure would help me a lot and I hope it could fill some other people's needs as well.

I can lead a ride Friday at 1pm and Sunday at 1pm if the weather holds out.

The Route (25ish miles):

Starting at the parking lot outside of Cushman Market and Cafe, we will head up Leverett road all the way to the center of Leverett, passing the school and safety center before summiting cave hill road. Coming down the back side of cave hill onto North Leverett road for a long way until we hit Wyola. At this point we shall turn left and face the final climb of the route: Locks Pond road. After that is a quick descent down the S curves and coast back down into cushman. This is a hilly route, probably between 1500-1700 feet of climb, but the roads are all fairly quiet and shaded during the climbs (spare the final accent on locks pond), so it's really not so bad. I usually keep an average speed of 14-15mph, so I guess this would fit into the "C" ride category.

Below I include a picture of the map. Ignore the part south of Cushman, that's the ride to and from my house.

Would another time work better? A different location/ route? Let me know!

Best wishes,
Noah

Dear Noah,

Thanks for excellent post and hosting!  I'm out of town a couple of weeks, but live in Shutesbury and will be happy to join you on these rides in the future.  We are very fortunate to have such routes!

Sincerely,
Brad.

It’s been great to hear from all of you, I am glad there is some interest in a ride this side of the river. It’s going to be pouring rain tomorrow, so let’s postpone. I’m free late weekday afternoons and most weekends, but what times work best for y’all?

I'm traveling a lot through mid September.  Should be flexible after that.  In the past, I've trained with UMASS team.  They met at the Newman Center for TWTh rides about 3 pm.  What is their schedule now?   Standard times and places, like the NCC TWTh rides would help participation.

I definitely agree with the standardized time and location. It looks like the umass xc team holds practices on Wednesdays, but otherwise I didn’t see umass events on the calendar.

I had been thinking cushman market as a starting point, but maybe the center of town or the rail trail entrance by Amherst college might work better. Any other ideas?

Hi Noah,

I’m in South Amherst so starting downtown would be a better choice for me at least.

As for day and time, Mondays after school would work best for me in September but once we hit early sundown it would have to be a weekend.

Downtown sounds good to me! Outside the bangs community center or in Kendrick park would be good close to parking for anyone who has to drive. Wanna plan for Monday august 30th around 4pm as a first ride date?

Hi Noah,

Monday looks to be rainy unfortunately. Let’s plan on something after 9/6! I won’t be available until then.

Hi guys,

I think we should do a ride at 10 on Sunday and 4:30 on Monday. Let's meet downtown right by the little parking that cuts through the common in Amherst. I'll be pretty wiped from Mt. Greylock, so we won't go too far too fast. Let me know if you can make it, or if another time on those days would work better for you. Hope to see you there!

Hi Noah,

It was great to meet you at the HC today. Great timing!

Tomorrow 10am works for me as long as I can be back by 12.45pm at home. I’d prefer to do a longer ride though and could start earlier if you'd like. What route are you thinking?

Hey guys,

Have you considered joining up witht the UMass cycling club for their weekly road rides. they usually have a few different options...
Noah I forget if you are part of the UMAC slack group...
