Hello,

I am trying to decide between the Giro Synth helmet and the Kask Protone helmet. Has anyone used either of these and liked or disliked the fit or features? Is the MIPS on the Synth a real safety boon? Also, I read that the Protone has a very low "retention system" in the back. I am worried that it won't work with my long hair/ponytail.

Thanks for any advice!

Melissa

The Giro synth is more oval-ish where as the kask protone is more round. MIPS is good but I personally would rather have a helmet that fits well with my head shape. My reason (not scientific at all) being that the helmet won’t spread the pressure evenly in event of a crash if it didn’t fit well in the first place.

My head is more round so I choose the protone. But you should try both first.

I believe noho bike has both the protone and synth - you can try them out there.

Have you considered Smith?  I'm on my 5th  helmet with Smith.  Great helmet.

Personal and stylistic preferences aside, I think this list is valuable:

Dana (my wife) had a horrific crash today sliding out on wet road at 25mph and was out for several minutes. She looks like she's going to be fine after all the scans came back normal, but her Specialized Echelon II took a major hit in the right rear, cracked in three places, but completely did its job. I will say that I strongly suspect that any helmet you buy today other than an ultra-cheap one or specifically aero one is probably going to be better than the best ones from five years ago due to improvements in technology - reason to upgrade regularly even if the helmet seems fine.

Geez. Heal up Dana!!

Zinj nailed it. Fit is the most important. MIPS is wonderful technology but if it doesn't fit you it's worthless. Most shops will let you try them on. Make sure and lean over to see if it shifts in the riding position.

Good luck,

Chris

I would love to hear a more recent review of helmets now.

Thank you everyone! I am going to head to Northampton Bicycle to try some on.

Thanks for the safety rating list, Donovan. After watching the Virgina Tech video, I am now going to replace my daughter's urban style helmet with a road style helmet!

Wishing you a quick recovery, Dana! I am so glad the helmet did its job.
